🔬 🌃 In the frame of the #europeanresearchersnight Marcel Sorribas, B-BRIGHTER researcher at the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC), participated in the round table about the use of animals in research. He focused on the use of #3Dbioprinting as an alternative method to reduce #AnimalTesting in science. Participants also talked about the history of animal use in science and research beginning in Roman times, and the health milestones achieved thanks to them, such as antibiotics or vaccines. And, while it is true that they are absolutely necessary for biomedical progress, it is also true that we waste way more of their lives than is ethically acceptable. A good deal of this waste is connected to inefficient breeding and genotyping strategies. This is not surprising, given the modern day complexities related to generating relevant genetic models for study. Tracking the information necessary to do this work responsibly has become overwhelming and unachievable using traditional methods. The application of artificial intelligence to guide breeding and genotyping strategies is changing all of this globally, increasing the percentage of experimentally relevant animals born and reducing the cage space needed to house them.

A new study has shown that only 5% of new therapies passing animal trials were successfully approved for human consumption. The researchers looked at 367 therapeutic interventions and found that only 14 passed human clinical trials. Why? The scientists conclude that animal studies are often poorly designed, invalidating their results. They also point to "notable discrepancies in the contexts of animal testing versus human application" which can lead to less relevant results.
