Here I was, leading an organization I had started 7 years ago. Everything was working... ✅ Revenue was up ✅ Culture was thriving ✅ Vision was being achieved Yet, I was bored 😣 I felt guilty. I was living my dream, but something felt...off. Turns out, I was just leading in the wrong stage. There are three stages of company growth, each requiring a different type of leader. 🔹 Stage 1 Movements need a "Pioneer-Leader." They move fast, take risk, and love hard pivots. They live for speed. 🔹🔹 Stage 2 Organizations need a "Developer-Leader." They take something good, and make it better. They live for incremental improvements. 🔹🔹🔹 Stage 3 Institutions need a "Manager-Leader." They are orderly, logical, and keep things the same year-over-year. They live for stability. I was a 🔹 Stage 1 Pioneer-Leader in a 🔹🔹 Stage 2 Organization. The company had outgrown my skillset. While admitting this felt weird, it was actually a good problem. 😌  -- Instead of staying too long, I found the best "developer-leader" I knew, who happened to be my #2 (Matthew Sonke). I spent three years training him up, made him the new #1, and then left staff (still on the board of directors). The company I founded is in good hands, albeit with a leader befitting of the company stage. Now, I'm pioneering something else (The Arena). I probably won't stay here forever either. Pioneer-Leaders need to move on (once a new leader is trained, of course). This shouldn't be taboo—it's just what pioneers do. ✌️ -- Who are my fellow Pioneer-Leaders out there, and what is next for you? PS: I learned this three-stage concept from Bob Shank and Jeff Gerhardt during The Master's Program (2017-20). As a proud graduate, I encourage you to check it out.

TALES FROM THE LEADERSHIP FRONT The CIO Who Built Futures, Not Just Cars Amara, the CIO of a major automobile manufacturer, navigated her days balancing the fast-paced world of automotive innovation with her true passion: mentoring. Known for her brilliance in driving the company’s digital transformation, she was equally admired for her ability to spark transformation in people. Amara’s schedule was relentless—conference calls, software rollouts, and strategy meetings. Yet, she always made time for her mentees. Every Wednesday morning, she hosted “Coffee & Code,” an informal mentoring session open to anyone in the company, from interns to senior engineers. Together, they explored cutting-edge technologies, shared career aspirations, and even tackled personal challenges. Outside of her company, Amara extended her mentorship to local tech communities. She partnered with nonprofit organizations, offering guidance to underrepresented groups eager to enter the tech and automotive industries. Her favorite moments were seeing mentees, once uncertain about their potential, land their dream jobs or launch startups. Amara believed that mentorship was a two-way street.
