Last week, BioQuest students from Hunts Point Alliance for Children (HPAC), Futures Ignite, and Areté Education Inc. gathered at Johnson & Johnson Innovation – JLABS and the New York Genome Center for an exciting end of year winter celebration and lab visit. Students engaged in hands on activities including extracting DNA from strawberries, competing in a precision pipetting challenge, making fake snow, and building innovative gingerbread houses. This immersive experience showcased their teamwork, problem-solving, and creativity. Thank you to all mentors, partners, and students who made this a fun, memorable day! #BioQuest #STEM #Mentoring

A really interesting article. Firstly I applaud Isabelle Kohler for recognising that she could find greater purpose by reaching beyond the conventional constraints of her existing role. That in itself is a challenge we all do well to consider at times! This is a great initiative. Over my career I met many young scientists with a passion and desire to help solve the great societal challenges we face through scientific endeavour. However, navigating the volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity of the real world can make it very difficult to plan and execute a satisfying career path. I will be interested to see how “NextMinds” develops. #NextMinds #education #careerpath

✨ AAPS Spotlight Series: Today we’re thrilled to highlight Aaron Lister from Cohort 2! ✨ 👉 What were you doing before joining AAPS? 🙋♂️ Before joining I had just completed my Chemistry degree at the University of Huddersfield; though before that I had a diverse working background, from serving in the air force to working as a chef, to cleaning, to labour work! I joined the CDT to advance my research skills and was drawn to the unique opportunity to work in a multidisciplinary environment. The innovative learning approach, especially the research incubator activities, excited me as it offered experiences beyond a typical PhD program. 👉 What is your PhD focussed on? 🙋♂️ The automotive industry relies heavily on using fossil oil-based feedstocks and toxic chemicals for producing plastics for the automotive industry. My research involves investigating the use of natural materials called terpenes, which come from plants, and their potential to be utilised to make eco-friendly plastics. 👉 What do you like to do when you aren’t working? 🙋♂️ When I'm not working, I enjoy playing guitar, watching football anxiously through my fingers (typical of a Leeds United fan), and have recently started learning Kung Fu! 👉 What does Advanced Propulsion Systems mean to you? 🙋♂️ Automotive propulsion systems represent more than just powering cars; they drive all forms of transport—from planes to boats to people —toward a future that’s more sustainable and connected, fostering greater community through increasing user interactions. 👉 What excites you most about being part of the CDT? 🙋♂️ What excites me most about being part of the CDT is the innovative, multidisciplinary community that allows me to collaborate with diverse experts, broadening my knowledge in areas I never expected to explore. 👉 What are you most looking forward to in the next 12 months? 🙋♂️ As I near the end of my PhD, I'm excited to complete my thesis and begin my scientific career, though it's bittersweet to leave the CDT and the incredible community I've been a part of. 👉 What is immediately next for you? 🙋♂️ Next on my agenda is collecting my final data in the lab and moving on to writing my thesis. After that, I'll explore various career options, applying everything I've learned within the CDT to enhance my future endeavours. 👉 Finally, what is your overall reflection of your time in AAPS so far? 🙋♂️ Being part of AAPS has given me the opportunity to learn about all facets of the automotive industry, from business and systems engineering to technological advancements. On a personal level, AAPS has significantly improved my communication skills. Glad for the opportunity today to lead a follow-up workshop with the Master of Biotechnology and Bioinformatics students in the BIO5BBM Bio-Business Management subject. Building on our previous session, where I emphasised the pivotal role of LinkedIn in shaping professional identities, today's workshop delved deeper into practical strategies. LinkedIn isn't just beneficial; it's essential. It's not only a part of the BIO5BBM curriculum but also highlighted as a key component of La Trobe University's Career Ready Advantage Program. During the session, we explored students' individual profiles, discussed effective engagement strategies, tackled the importance of making that first crucial post, and identified areas for growth. This is why mentoring is crucial. ✨New students look up to their mentors, who are responsible for setting the right example. I’ve been lucky to have mentors who not only taught me good science but also showed me the right values. From them, I have learned that taking the time to develop and refine our mentoring skills is just as important as any scientific training. 🧠 We often talk about the pressures and challenges of academia, but we can improve this environment ourselves!
