"We hear a lot of stupid ideas from people who have never lived in a village before." "You cannot solve for the Indian farmer by sitting in your ivory tower." Do these statements sound familiar to you? Well, we do hear them often too. While there is truth to these statements sometimes the opposite can also be true. A great example of this is in the success of UPI. Ten years ago, most people would have laughed at the idea of being able to pay through a smartphone in rural India. Today more than 60% of people in rural India are aware of UPI and adoption is increasing year on year. One of the major reasons that drove this adoption was the simple 'speaker box' at retail outlets. When a stupid idea works, it becomes a 'great idea', doesn't it. However, most companies, especially startups, do not have the ability to scale and solve at the same time. Even for startups with cash, trial and error at scale means you also have keep burning and diluting. Using Essmart's distribution network to test your product is a great way to do this effectively - by co-creating with the rural customer and setting your company up for success. It was great moderating the panel and also participating in an exciting discussion with all of the fellow panelists. Suresh, your insights on the student innovation, use of technology to scale and funding student led startups; Pulkit, your ideas on founding your own startup on the rock solid grounds of unit profitability and choosing the right investors to back you up; Juliane, your sharing of experiences from both European and Indian startup ecosystem and how to use technology as an enabler but not the end goal while defining the problems that the startup is solving; and finally Devika, your practical insights on authenticity led branding, and a sharp focus on the solution as marketing differentiators, were very well appreciated by the audience. Personally, I focused on discussing the importance of selecting the right set of people - as the founding team, and the next set of key employees, as a key management task that the founder/ CEO must perform to ensure success of the company. Everything equal, it’s the team and the people who make all the difference. Thanks to DTU-DCE Fraternity Forum and Delhi Management Association for hosting this great event.
