#NRWStartupReport2024: The NRW startup ecosystem at a glance | The latest #NRWStartupReport provides deep insights into our regional startup ecosystem. In collaboration with Startup Genome, Dealroom.co and KPMG, the Ministerium für Wirtschaft, Industrie, Klimaschutz und Energie des Landes NRW has conducted a data-based analysis and drawn a portrait of the mood in the #NRW startup ecosystem. Important highlights from the data-based analysis: ➕ The NRW startup ecosystem is growing: From 2020 to 2023, 2,335 startups were founded; 534 of which were launched in 2023. ➕ The highest growth rates are recorded by the urban centers and research clusters in #Aachen, Münster and East Westphalia. ➕ On average, seed rounds in NRW are larger than in most other German states and are internationally competitive; in international comparison, NRW startups also receive early-stage funding sooner. ➕ More and more international VCs invest in NRW startups. ➕ The majority of NRW startups pursue solutions in climate action and environmental sustainability. ➕ The proportion of startups with female founders or female C-level executives has grown. ➕ The global increase of funding for #deeptech startups promises great potential for NRW's focus on deep-tech industries and the high degree of specialization of its #university research clusters. Key insights from the mood portrait: ➕ The majority of participants perceive the NRW startup ecosystem positively and rate it as "very good" or "good", appreciating the large number of good networking and funding opportunities. ➕ Most participating startups took advantage of state or federal funding offers like the incubation programs of the Exzellenz Start-up Center.NRW and the Gründungsstipendium.NRW or the EXIST-Transfer of Research and EXIST-Business Start-up Grant. It is rewarding to see the NRW startup ecosystem grow and become a competitive player in the national and global startup scene. We are proud to contribute to this development by facilitating the translation of cutting-edge research from RWTH Aachen University and Uniklinik RWTH Aachen into innovative startups with societal and economic impact. One of these startups is our #RWTHspinoff cylib. In the mood portrait, CEO Lilian Schwich recalls the beginnings of the battery recycling startup at the IME Process Metallurgy and Metal Recycling. Yet, there is still a lot of room for improvements. The report also points to remaining and new challenges for founders and uncovers negative trends in the NRW startup ecosystem that require further action on various fronts. Therefore, the NRW Startup Report 2024 is a strong incentive for us to keep supporting researchers in turning their groundbreaking ideas into impactful startups and paving the way for research-based innovation. As a “Bonner”, born and bred, it makes me proud for us to support the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Industry, Climate Action and Energy of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia in the release of the North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) Startup Report 2024. Living abroad it makes me even more proud to see what a great place for startup founders NRW has become: - A great place to start new ventures: NRW continues to consistently create more than 500 startups annually (2,335 since 2020), making the State one of the strongest contributors to startup activity in Germany. - A great place to get funded: Not all startups get to a funding round, the opposite holds true globally and in NRW. However, those founders than can convince their Early Stage Investors receive highly competitive funding rounds (median of 1.3 MN at Seed / 7.7 MN at Series A), providing the financial runway required for globally competitive product development and the start of a successful growth trajectory. - A great place to scale: Since 2020 NRW has seen 16 companies achieve true scaleup status with a valuation north of 100 MN USD each. Companies such as SAP LeanIX and DeepL amply demonstrate that impressive late-stage funding rounds and valuations are possible. With SAP-LeanIX, NRW not only can count another unicorn in its stable but also is home to the largest exit in Germany. The State’s Scale-up.NRW program does its part in providing scaleup mentorship and support for the next generation of fast scalers, a first in Germany and with only very few similar programs available to founders globally. - A great place to create technology with true impact: 91 startups in NRW are directly working towards furthering #SDG with investment growing at a compound annual growth rate of 37% since 2019. Similarly, NRW is home to an impressive number of Cleantech Startups, working toward the very technologies we so urgently need to help address the Global Climate Crisis. - A great place to create value: NRW startups today account for USD 11.5 BN in ecosystem value, having added approx. 2 BN in only in the last 12 months and accounting for nearly 100,000 new and high value jobs having been created between 2020 and 2023. - A great place with remaining potential: Success factor gaps remain with still too few startups receiving early stage funding, with - whilst improvements are visible - still too few women participating in the startup economy (a problem not unique to NRW but rather a persistent issue globally) and with potential in further connecting the vibrant university and excellence cluster landscape with the startup community. Here at Startup Genome, we are looking forward to next year’s report and the next chapter in NRW’s startup story. Recently, our partner Aristotelis Xenofontos spoke with Trevor Clawson from Forbes about the dynamic startup landscape in Spain— which has expanded beyond Madrid and Barcelona, in a "multipolar innovation ecosystem" 📰 Historically, Barcelona has been Spain’s primary startup hub. Good universities, a strong industrial base, the presence of a government-funded supercomputer, major startup events like 4YFN and a well-established base of 38,000 tech jobs, it’s no wonder the city is seen as a key innovation center. 📍 But Madrid is emerging strongly, particularly in fintech and digital services, attracting €694 million in VC funding last year and outpacing Barcelona’s €582 million. “There is more money in Madrid, but more startups in Barcelona.” Madrid’s edge also lies in housing Spain’s biggest VC funds, providing startups with close access to investors. ⚙️ Beyond these two hubs, investment is spreading to cities like Valencia, Malaga, and Bilbao, creating a “flywheel effect” that’s inspiring new founders and fueling innovation across Spain. This nationwide growth is transforming Spain into a powerful, distributed hub for innovation and investment. Read the full article on Forbes below:
