As of 2024, there are estimated to be over 280 million people living outside their countries of origin. 🌍 Many of these migrants face discrimination in their new society, confronted with housing struggles, have limited access to education and basic health services, and are exploited in the labour force. ⛔ On the heels of #InternationalMigrantsDay, we look at the 3 key ways we can help migrants integrate better into our societies, and reflect on how a holistic, compassionate integration strategy can help communities flourish! 🤝🏽 #RiseWithRYTHM #CommunityDevelopment #EducationForAll #DiversityEquityInclusivity

Did you know that it could take 1-2 years for illegal immigrants to reach America? This causes developmental deficits in children accompanying their parents on such long journeys. Most of the migrant families in transit find their children not being able to speak even till the age of 4. Those children never get the opportunity to grow to their full potential. Many minors continue to be the victims of sexual assault while moving in transit. These children end up never receiving the care they require, be it mental or physical. According to data from the National Institute of Health (INS). In January 2024, four deaths were reported in children under five years of age, three of them due to acute respiratory infection and one due to acute diarrheal disease. These problems continue only to increase because as of 29th February 2024, more than 68,400 migrants have left their homes to be on their way to illegally enter America in 2024 itself. 20 percent of them are children and adolescents. The number of migrants in 2023 crossing the jungle was 520,000 and this is projected to increase by 20 percent this year. This is one of the main issues the American healthcare system faces. Doctors end up treating undocumented patients but the costs remain uncompensated, which remains at 60 million dollars as of now. There needs to be a better system for the immigrants seeking asylum to reduce such deficits affecting the human resources in these nations. 🌟 We’re pleased to share that Fernando Vasco Chironda, EAPN Policy and Advocacy Officer, attended yesterday's MEP breakfast at the European Parliament. The event focused on CSO priorities for new MEPs regarding EU migration policies. 🔶 As EAPN, we stated that social rights should be better mainstreamed within the new Pact on Migration and that MS should better investigate the non-take up rate of migrants while accessing social protection schemes. 🙌This breakfast was a great opportunity to connect grassroots civil society organisations with progressive MEPs, building solidarity and discussing key challenges and priorities for the new mandate. 🤝With the new Pact and upcoming discussions on the Facilitator’s Package, building solidarity and alliances is more important than ever. #EAPN #Humanrights #Policy #Migration #MEPBreakfast #CivilSociety

The right to adequate housing, enshrined in Article 25 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Article 11 of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR), guarantees everyone access to a safe, secure, and dignified place to live. For undocumented migrants, this right is particularly crucial as they often face unsafe or overcrowded conditions, homelessness, or exploitation by landlords due to their status. General Comment No. 4 of the ICESCR emphasizes that adequate housing must ensure legal security of tenure, affordability, habitability, and accessibility, without discrimination. Migrants are frequently excluded from formal housing markets, making them vulnerable to abuse. Upholding this right means governments must adopt inclusive policies that prevent discrimination and ensure emergency shelters and social housing are accessible to everyone, regardless of migration status. Recognizing this right for undocumented migrants promotes their dignity, safety, and integration into society. #HumanRights #AdequateHousing #MigrationMatters #UndocumentedMigrants #HousingIsAHumanRight #EqualityForAll #HumanDignity #SocialJustice #SafeShelter #EndHomelessness #ICESCRight #UniversalRights #RightToHousing #EconomicJustice #HousingEquity #MigrantSupport #FairTreatment #HumanRightsMatter #CompassionInAction #AdvocateForChange

A recent study led by Professor Anna Ziersch from Flinders University followed 25 refugees and asylum seekers for three years. The study revealed that unstable housing significantly affects refugees' and asylum seekers' physical and mental health. Challenges such as language barriers, lack of rental references, discrimination, and difficulties in establishing social connections make it even more difficult for refugees and asylum seekers to secure stable housing, especially in the context of the broader housing crisis. These findings align with the discussions we've had in the SETSCoP (Settlement Engagement and Transition Support Community of Practice) with settlement service providers who work to assist refugees and asylum seekers in finding suitable housing. The researchers recommend comprehensive support strategies, such as longer periods of supported housing and initiatives to help build connections within neighbourhoods. 🔊 Listen to the podcast on Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) Australia: https://lnkd.in/eWxfHCBr #Housing #HousingCrisis #Refugees #AsylumSeekers #Discrimination #SocialConnections #Community #SettlementProviders

📢 New Publication: Modern Slavery Risks Among People Lacking Official Documentation An estimated 850 million people around the world lack official documentation, disproportionately affecting disadvantaged groups including women, younger people, less educated people, rural dwellers, migrants, refugees and those living in poverty. This lack of documentation renders these individuals invisible to policy makers and service providers, increasing their vulnerability to being trapped in cycles of modern slavery and re-exploitation. This global evidence review is the initial output of a new UNU-CPR project in collaboration with the The Freedom Fund to examine the pivotal role that access to official documentation plays in perpetuating #modernslavery. The report serves as a call to leverage documentation as a powerful tool to address the systemic underpinnings of modern slavery, and advance progress towards achieving Sustainable Development Goal 16.9 to guarantee legal identify for all by 2030. 📘 Read the report here ➡ https://lnkd.in/et-H65Bg

Violent riots in the UK 🇬🇧 show very clearly that social cohesion is now imperilled. Not just among the towns and cities of the UK, but among all countries that shared an open door policy to migrants. And we are not talking about legal quotas of skilled migrants here. We are talking about undocumented arrivals from countries where political violence is so endemic, that the people escaping from these failed states are deeply traumatised, and have not been acculturated to the norms of non-violent politics. So what to do? For every unhinged migrant who does something terrible, far right sympathisers will volunteer to bring their brand of justice to the streets. They will meet violence with violence. And state imposed law and order will turn nativists into enemies of the state. It has been said that the road to hell is paved with good intentions. The good intentions of governments allowing mass migration to alter the fabrics of their local societies has now come across the deep seated resentment of the local people who, rightly or wrongly, feel disempowered, disenfranchised and largely overridden by their ‘sophisticated,’ ‘open-hearted’ elites and their supporters who believe they’re on the moral high ground. Virtuous to a fault, their ideological ship is now sinking. It might start in the UK but we will all pay the price for this bad governance soon enough.
