What are alternative proteins? Alternative proteins are proteins that can be synthesised or extracted from plants and plant-based animal cells. They can help reduce carbon emissions and are subject to an authorisation process for consumption by European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). Alternative proteins can be extracted from: fungi 🍄, insects 🦟, peas 🟢, rapeseed 🌻, and algae 🌊. They can be used both as animal feed and as part of food products to improve their technological and nutritional characteristics. Another highly profitable use is in cosmetics. The LIKE-A-PRO project, funded by Horizon Europe, aims to develop new, more accessible and available alternative proteins, as well as study their market acceptance. 👉 More information here: https://lnkd.in/eUc-r2wF

Tesi's portfolio company Onego Bio, a Finnish-U.S. #food #ingredient company, has submitted a #GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) notification to the #FDA for #Bioalbumen®, a non-animal ovalbumin produced via #precision #fermentation using #Trichoderma #reesei. Bioalbumen® replicates the amino acid sequence of natural #egg #white #protein, offering a #sustainable and scalable alternative to conventional egg production. It reduces #greenhouse gas #emissions by 89%, land use by 95%, and water consumption by 87%, while addressing global supply chain challenges and mitigating risks like #Avian #Influenza. Bioalbumen® is designed as a drop-in solution for applications such as baked goods, pasta, confectionery, and ready-made meals. The $300 billion egg market stands to benefit from its #environmental advantages, cost stability, and versatility.
We're excited to announce the submission of our Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) notification to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for our non-animal ovalbumin, Bioalbumen®. This is a critical step toward bringing the first non-animal egg protein with an amino acid sequence identical to the natural protein, to the global food market. “Our GRAS filing marks a significant milestone for Onego Bio, reinforcing our commitment to building a more resilient supply chain and sustainable food system” said Maija Itkonen, CEO of Onego Bio. “By supplementing traditional agricultural inputs, we can help alleviate future supply chain risks and price fluctuations and provide significant benefits to human health and safety and the environment." FSANZ Advances Vow’s Cell-Cultured Quail Approval Process with Updated Standards The Food Standards Australia New Zealand agency has advanced in a big way toward approval of Vow Group's cell-cultured quail, a breakthrough in the field of meat cultivation. Following a deep scientific review, FSANZ confirmed the safety of the product by opening a second phase of public consultation. This review indeed concluded that Vow's cell-cultured quail is free of toxicological, nutritional, or allergenic risks, and hence it has really opened up new horizons for cultivated meat in both Australia and New Zealand. ** https://lnkd.in/dR9GmvsV **

Today was a big day for Onego, as we finally got to submit our dossier for the FDA approval. We see many companies announcing how they have "obtained" or "were awarded" approval through the self-affirmed route. Onego Bio decided to take another path and put all focus on going through the official, formal route of gathering the data and submitting it to FDA for their review. Our customers will require it in any case, and to our mind, regulatory is more of a necessary, authoritative step than a PR act. Thoughts?

The Truth About the Impossible Burger's Safety The claim that the Impossible Burger is perfectly safe and healthy relies on the FDA's designation of soyleghemoglobin as GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe). This designation means the FDA approved the product with minimal testing. After some back-and-forth with the FDA, a simple genotoxicity test and a 28-day animal feeding study convinced the FDA that this synthetic “pigment” was similar to heme and completely benign. However, physicians and scientists at GMOScience are raising concerns about the burger's safety. The same rat feeding study used for the GRAS status revealed alarming results: rats fed soyleghemoglobin developed unexplained weight gain, changes in blood markers indicating inflammation or kidney disease, and possible signs of anemia. As we embrace innovative foods, it's crucial to question and understand the science behind them. What are your thoughts on the safety of synthetic ingredients? https://lnkd.in/eiqjB2f7 #ImpossibleBurger #FoodSafety #GRAS #Innovation #HealthConcerns #SyntheticFoods

Novel #feedingredients such as #algal oil, #insectmeal and #singlecellproteins are not only good for #sustainability, but also for #fish and #shrimp health and welfare, growth and robustness. 🐟🦐 That's according to research by BioMar and Innovafeed presented at last week's #ResponsibleSeafoodSummit held by the Global Seafood Alliance. 💬 “The novel ingredients also offer exciting synergies with existing raw materials. Single cell proteins incubated with #soybean meals can reduce the presence of anti-nutrients as well as significantly increase overall protein levels. This technology opens other opportunities with a range of other existing, high-volume raw materials," said Simon Wadsworth, Global R&D Director, BioMar. ✨ Read more details here ➡️ https://lnkd.in/dzpm5582 Image credit: BioMar.
