#pwdaction # The event in the past week about a certain business and a PWD citizen has drawn a lot of attention. The Nigeria's Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act of 2018 marks a significant milestone in the country's commitment to ensuring equality and inclusivity for individuals with disabilities. The Act prohibits discrimination based on disability and promotes accessibility, inclusive education, independent living, community inclusion, and equality. It mandates that public buildings and facilities be accessible, promotes inclusive education, and empowers individuals with disabilities to live independently and participate in their communities. Despite its positive impact, challenges remain in implementing the Act fully. Many public spaces lack adequate accessibility features, hindering individuals with disabilities from accessing essential services. Read more: https://lnkd.in/d8eHPRyG

#Disabilitydata #Inclusion #Womenwithdisabilities #Sexualreproductivehealth The absence of credible and reliable data is a source of worry for persons with disabilities, (PWDs), in Nigeria. In an interview on #Wave91.7fm Portharcourt as, the Executive Director of Centre for Disability and Inclusion Africa, I emphasized that the lack of data worsens hardships for individuals with disabilities in the country. 2. I urged proper data collection and documentation of persons with disabilities to plan and support inclusive development. 3- I also urged stakeholders involved in sustainable development to prioritize inclusivity by completely addressing the needs of individuals with disabilities. 4. I also stressed that policymakers remain unaware of how to effectively plan and implement inclusive smart cities, worsening the challenges faced by PWDs, especially women with disabilities. My advocacy began on a small scale in women and youth spaces and at international conferences like the Internet Governance Forum and RightsCon. However, being identified by the National Union of Disabled Persons of Uganda to lead sessions on ‘Enhancing Knowledge Management, ICT Adaptation, and Digital Skilling Among Persons with Disabilities’ gave me the opportunity to share my experiences, insights, and knowledge of ICT accessibility features with a broader community of people with disabilities. Along the way, I picked up several lessons that have significantly improved my facilitation, presentation, and advocacy skills. https://lnkd.in/dZKykd3j #DisabilityInclusion #DigitalInclusion #Technology #a11y

It is essential that we promote inclusive employment in our workplaces and provide people with disabilities the chance to have meaningful and fulfilling jobs. By creating an inclusive work environment, we can ensure that everyone has equal opportunities to contribute their skills and talents to the workforce. This not only benefits individuals with disabilities but also enriches our workplaces and society as a whole. Let us continue to advocate for inclusive employment and create a more inclusive and diverse workforce. #DisabilityIsNotInability #TogetherforBetter #RachelIroruTheDisabilityAdvocate

Am starting a campaign for and with people with disability. As of now, Uganda has one of the most progressive laws for people with disabilities in the world. This states, among other things, that discrimination against people with disabilities is prohibited. Children with disabilities have the right to education and adults have the right to a job. 80% of all people with disabilities in the world live in developing countries. Life can present many obstacles for people with disabilities. These challenges lead to social isolation, poverty and reduced quality of life. However, amid these obstacles, Uganda is gradually transforming to become more inclusive. While there is still much work to be done, the progress made thus far can be an example for other countries and is a glimmer of hope for people with disabilities.#letsembracedisability #paradeforinclusivedisability #JinjaUganda#31/08/2024
