➖ KEY POINTS from 'Psychological First Aid' ➖ 🗝The session focused on building emotionally safe spaces in different contexts, where there is the possibility to face high levels of stress. 🗝Patti and Tembi explained how trauma affects the brain and the nervous system, and how it can impair learning, communication, and well-being. 🗝They introduced the concept of triggers, which are unconscious reactions to situations that activate earlier wounds or traumas, and how to manage them by breathing and self-regulating. 🗝We were introduced to the RAPID model, which is a step-by-step approach to provide psychosocial support to someone who is facing difficulties or challenges, by building rapport, assessing, prioritising, intervening, and directing to further care. 🗝Finally, the session provided us with interpersonal and organisational strategies for creating emotional safety, such as checking in and out, creating reflective spaces, celebrating each other, and creating consistency and routine. 🤔ARE MENTAL HEALTH AND PHYSICAL FIRST AIDERS DIFFERENT 🤔 Interestingly in March 2024, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) published guidance to employers around disclosing personal information in a Mental Health emergency. “The Data Protection law DOES allow organisations to share personal information in an urgent or emergency situation, including to help them prevent loss of life or serious physical, emotional or mental harm”. In it’s update the ICO quite rightly states that symptoms of mental health emergencies can be difficult to recognise and difficult to judge. Comparing back to physical first aid, we ‘look, listen, feel’ for breaths, we see if there is colour in the skin, we have much more tangible information and actions we can take I would suggest, in comparison to mental health first aid. #TheLearn2Group #FirstAidTraining #Brandon #FirstAidCourse #MentalHealthFirstAid
