How can nature inspire innovation? When it comes to innovation, nature is one of our greatest teachers. Two powerful approaches for tapping into this wisdom are Biophilic Design and Biomimicry. Biophilic Design brings nature into our spaces - whether by integrating natural elements, connecting spaces to the outdoors, or mimicking nature’s forms and patterns in design. It's about enhancing the connection between humans and the natural world. Biomimicry goes further by studying how nature functions. It draws inspiration from the efficiency of natural processes - like the way lotus leaves repel water to create self-cleaning surfaces, or how whale fins inspire more efficient wind turbine blades due to their unique, serrated edges. Both approaches help us create smarter, more sustainable solutions. How do you see nature influencing innovation in your field?

And as it is the case for other sectors, improving #sustainability and #circularity while maintaining a high level of quality and aesthetics is one of today's crucial challenges. 📢 Reparaciones Náuticas Amura was present during the #Navilia2024 exhibition. This event is an international shipbuilding exhibition that was held from the 21st to the 23rd of May at the IFEVI in Vigo’s Exhibitions Center. It was an opportunity to present the MC4 project to the public and companies in the maritime sector. 🎉The ERIS team is happy to announce that Professor Boud Verbeiren from the Department of Water and Climate - VUB is part of a consortium that has been awarded a European Partnership DUT (Driving Urban Transitions) grant for the project GREEN-INC (GRowing Effective & Equitable Nature-based Solutions through INClusive Climate Actions). Congratulations!   🍃 The Circular Urban Economies (CUE) for a regenerative urbanism Transition Pathway is underpinned by the idea that cities can repair the degraded natural cycles of the planet while supporting a high quality of life for all their inhabitants. The DUT Call 2022 selected 12 projects in the CUE pathway focusing on 3 themes: 1) Urban resource sharing and circularity; 2) Nature-based Solutions, including this approved ‘GREEN-INC’ project; and 3) Urban Food Systems. 🎯 Proposing Nature-based Solutions as an answer to climate change has multiple benefits. However, these solutions can often also reinforce urban inequalities and injustices in cities. To better account for these dilemmas and trade-offs, the consortium has the objective to investigate Inclusive Climate Actions (ICAs) that tackle climate change and urban inequalities simultaneously.   🌍 The GREEN-INC consortium comprises 11 partners. In recent years, the focus on sustainability has extended into the sports industry, with various initiatives aimed at reducing environmental impact while generating long-term economic benefits. Here are some prominent examples of sustainable sports projects and their positive impacts: 1. Eco-Friendly Stadiums Many modern stadiums are built with sustainable architecture, incorporating eco-friendly materials, energy-efficient systems, and renewable energy sources. For example, Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, USA, has received LEED Platinum certification, the highest standard in sustainable building. The stadium features rainwater collection systems, solar panels, and water-efficient landscaping, which significantly reduce water and energy consumption. 2. Renewable Energy Integration Sports venues and training centers are increasingly powered by renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and geothermal. For example, the Amsterdam ArenA, home to the Ajax football team, is powered by over 4,200 solar panels and a wind turbine, plus a battery storage system that reuses old electric car batteries. This shift reduces carbon emissions, saves on energy costs, and provides a model for clean energy adoption that can be replicated across industries. 3. Waste Reduction and Recycling Programs Major events and stadiums are implementing waste reduction programs to limit the environmental impact of waste generated during sports events. The Tokyo 2020 Olympics, for instance, introduced a robust recycling system, collecting and reusing materials for medals, podiums, and uniforms from recycled products. 4. Sustainable Transportation Initiatives Encouraging fans to use public transportation, bike sharing, or electric shuttle services has become common practice at many sports venues. By reducing the number of private vehicles, these initiatives lower CO2 emissions and decrease traffic congestion. The London 2012 Olympics, for instance, was praised for its efficient public transit solutions, setting a benchmark for future events. 5. Water Conservation Measures Many sports complexes have implemented water conservation systems to reduce excessive water usage. Techniques like rainwater harvesting, greywater recycling, and efficient irrigation are popular in stadiums with extensive landscaping needs. These methods, seen in venues such as Levi’s Stadium in California, reduce water costs and consumption, conserving a valuable resource while cutting operational expenses. Sustainable sports projects deliver a range of benefits, both environmentally and economically. They contribute to reduced greenhouse gas emissions, lower water and energy usage, and decreased waste. Financially, these projects often reduce operational costs through energy and water savings, and create opportunities for new revenue streams through sponsorships and partnerships focused on sustainability.

Why is Engineering a Better World our main goal? 🚀 Those of you who have been following me for a while (newcomers, welcome!), are completely aware of the nature of my posts 😊 I firmly believe we are living a systemic change, in which the old world is dying and a new one is being born. Therefore, it is fundamental for our generation to define the course 💪🏼 We can continue with business as usual, which is responsible of the iniquities affecting the world, or we can define a new concept of commercial relations. For us, the new world must be: 💨 Emission and waste free ✊🏼 Socially inclusive and fair We believe that working on circular design will strictly affect the first point. It is the second point that defines business relationships and their nature.
