Unconscious bias comes from our upbringing, background, & social environment. These biases live in our subconscious minds, forcing us to make quick decisions. While this is a natural mental shortcut, it can lead to unintentional discrimination. To address this, we need to: ✔ Analyze our actions, decisions, & perceptions on a regular basis. ✔ Talk to people who have different viewpoints. ✔ Learn about various cultures & experiences. ✔ Hire people from a variety of backgrounds & use blind recruitment methods. When we are aware of our biases, we can question & fight them, which makes the world a better place for everyone. This post addresses common misunderstandings about bias, particularly in the context of diversity and inclusion. Although the term "myths" may not be entirely accurate based on the traditional definition, these misleading ideas function similarly by shaping how we understand bias in workplaces and communities. Myth #1: Only members of the dominant population have biases. Truth: Bias is a human trait, not confined to any one group. Everyone, regardless of background, carries biases, and these can impact interactions across different populations. Myth #2: Having a bias means you are a bad person. Truth: Biases are natural, often unconscious beliefs developed from our experiences and environment. Acknowledging bias doesn’t reflect on personal morality – it’s what we do about them that matters. Myth #3: The content of biases is always about negative characteristics. Truth: Biases can also be "positive" but still harmful, such as assuming all Black men are athletic or all Asians are technologically skilled. These assumptions limit our ability to see people as individuals and make balanced decisions. Myth #4: Biases are so deeply rooted it is impossible to become aware of them. Truth: Through techniques like the "First Thought" exercise, we can become more aware of our biases and work to minimize their influence. This awareness is key to personal development and improving diversity and inclusion. Myth #5: There’s very little you can do to defeat bias. Truth: There are numerous strategies—such as education, exposure to diverse experiences, and focusing on shared human values —that can minimize bias. This nuanced view of bias encourages ongoing self-reflection and emphasizes that everyone has the capacity to reduce their biases through awareness and deliberate effort. What would happen if we let our unconscious biases influence our decisions? 🤔 Firstly, a big thank you to the incredible Tapestry team in Southeast Asia for joining this workshop on unconscious bias in the workplace! 🙌 Your engagement, openness, and commitment to these important conversations are key to creating more inclusive environments. In our sessions, we explored the concept of unconscious bias—automatic judgments and stereotypes that can shape our decisions without us even realising it. We learned that: - Biases are natural, but they can create barriers to fairness and inclusivity if left unchecked. - Self-awareness is the first step to overcoming bias. By pausing to reflect before making decisions, we can challenge assumptions that may be based on stereotypes rather than facts. - Diverse perspectives matter. By welcoming different voices and experiences, we can foster creativity, collaboration, and stronger results. - We also practiced using tools like B.U.G.S. and A.C.E., practical methods for recognising and addressing bias in our daily interactions. Bias is like your phone’s autocorrect 📲 You think you’re typing something sensible, but it keeps slipping in its own suggestions without you realizing. You won’t notice the ridiculousness until you slow down and really pay attention to what’s being “auto-filled” in your thoughts. To discover if you have unconscious biases, take a closer look at the people, content, and experiences you surround yourself with. These often shape our perspectives in subtle ways. 💭 Here's the EASIEST way to break it down: 1️⃣ People You Hang Out With: Look at the five people you spend the most time with. Are they from diverse backgrounds, in terms of ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic status, or worldview? 👉 If they’re very similar, it could suggest that your exposure to different perspectives is limited, potentially reinforcing certain biases. Expanding your circle can broaden your view. 2️⃣ Books You Read: Examine the last five books you've read. Do the authors come from varied cultures or experiences, or do they mostly share similar outlooks? 👉 If you’re primarily reading the same types of voices, you might not be challenging your own assumptions or exposing yourself to different ways of thinking. 3️⃣ Shows You Watch: Consider the five TV shows, films, or YouTube channels you watch regularly. Do they represent a wide range of characters, stories, and viewpoints, or are they homogenous? 👉 Media consumption can either challenge stereotypes or reinforce them, depending on what you're tuning into. 4️⃣ Social Media Feeds: What does your social media feed look like? Do the accounts you follow promote diverse thoughts and conversations, or is it an echo chamber of familiar perspectives? 👉 Algorithms often reinforce what you already like, so this is a good space to actively diversify. 5️⃣ Workplace Conversations: Reflect on the people you collaborate with at work. Are they from different professional, cultural, or personal backgrounds? 👉 Does your work environment encourage discussions from a variety of viewpoints, or is it largely aligned in one direction?
