A big week in the city working with Deakin University and VET Development Centre (VDC) on Digital Technologies and AI. On Monday and Tuesday I joined Sunil Aryal, PhD, FHEA and Mehul Warade from the Faculty of Information technology in delivering a two-day intensive as part of the Grad Cert in Digital Technologies, organised by Unit Chair Dr Carly Sawatzki and supported by Julianne Lynch and Maria Vamvakas. The course is designed for current secondary educators who are out-of-field in Digital Tech, with many coming from a Maths/Science/Humanities background. Partnering with the Faculty of Info Tech means that the teacher-students get a healthy dose of real world programming experience. My small role in the two days involved looking at how contemporary tools (GenAI, of course) can play a role in Digital Tech instruction, creating resources, problem solving, and differentiation. Then today I headed down the road to VDC, where I worked with the Fellows in a hands-on workshop covering multimodal generative AI in the context of vocational education for secondary and adult learners. One of the best parts (other than blowing a few minds with what GenAI is already capable of) was that we created a number of immediately useful resources from assessment items through to this very simple (and VDC coloured!) resource collection with the tools we addressed on the day: https://lnkd.in/gAKQt2Mp Time to go home! ✈️ #artificialintelligence #education #qualification #teachers #digital #AI #vocationaleducation #VET

I just finished the Pearson EdTech Symposium on AI, and it so happened that at the same time, I was also completing the two-week Effective Higher Education Teaching Workshop, under the expert guidance of Paul Dölle. Both were packed with insights. I am constantly reminded that for effective teaching, we must start by teaching ourselves first, and this learning should last a lifetime — lifelong learning is part of our jobs. As for AI, it's taking a front seat in education, even though some still try to ban it. I stand for cooperating with AI, as it can deepen the learning process, improve how we set student tasks and foster critical thinking. But at the same time, it demands higher skills and competencies from us as educators. Events like these are exactly what helps us develop those skills effectively.
Pearson ED.tech Symposium was issued by Pearson North America to Yana Sokolova.

🎉Congratulations to Anna Villarica (FASoS), Sanne Schreurs (FHML) and Jairaj Gopalakrishnan (FASoS) for winning an EDLAB Education Research Grant for their research proposal "Creative and AI-proof assessments/education design"! 👉🏻Which issue will the project tackle? In today’s education landscape, AI is unavoidable, raising concerns about the authenticity of written work and the potential impact on creativity and critical thinking. Additionally, Boards of Examinors are calling for educational redesigns to address AI-related issues. While some educators are unsure where to begin, others have already introduced innovative, AI-proof teaching methods. What will the project do? This project aims to gather best practice case studies and practical advice into a single toolkit. The toolkit will focus on improving checks and balances, designing creative AI-proof assessments, and fostering AI-inclusive education. Why is this important? The open-access toolkit, based on research and co-creation sessions with staff, will provide valuable resources to help educators navigate AI in education and support effective teaching strategies. #education #teaching #learning #EDLAB

I had the pleasure of guest lecturing in the "Theories for Inclusive Education" (EDPT7237) module, which is part of the Master in Education (MEd) program at Trinity College Dublin. The session, titled "Ready Teacher One: Using Design Thinking to Tackle Equity and Inclusion Issues in the Era of AI", introduced design thinking as a viable vehicle through which to understand and respond to the needs of teachers and learners in accessing AI tools for quality education. Continued Professional Development (CPD) remains one of the most important goals for ensuring that education systems are responsive to the ever-changing educational landscape. UNESCO's AI Competency framework for teachers offers valuable insights and guidelines for supporting teachers during these challenging times. #CPD #TeacherDevelopment #AI #AIliteracy #designthinking
