This year's UN General Assembly #UNGA will be a landmark one as the world gathers for the #SummitoftheFuture , a once-in-a-generation opportunity for change for current and future generations. What does it take to cultivate conditions for positive change? One of the hardest and most critical elements is culture. No surprise that it is identified as a foundational element for the UN's own change agenda, #OurCommonFuture and UN 2.0. That's why UN partners are taking action together with “Transformative Spaces,” a collective initiative to convene “safe and inclusive spaces for connection, dialogue, co-creation and transformation” and amplify these across different workspaces and networks of engagement and dialogue. Convening the #NewWork #systemschange action are Liliana Uruburo, Henan Cheng, Eric Martin, Laurel Patterson, Gabriel Tuan, Nina Grinman, Beth Magne-Watts When UNICEF Innovation have done research to understand major barriers to innovating, many of the same elements have been identified that Transformative Space is addressing -- time, trust, psychological safety, deep listening and inclusion. I'm delighted to be a part of this initiative and you can be too if you are in New York this week: 🕘 When: 19 September 2024 09:30-11:30AM (EDT) 📍 Where: Teachers College, Columbia University, New York, NY 10027

This year's theme "Indigenous peoples in voluntary isolation and initial contact" shines a light on the unique vulnerabilities and rights of those indigenous communities who have chosen to remain isolated or have only recently encountered the outside world. However, protecting their autonomy and self-determination is not only a fundamental human right, but also essential for preserving invaluable cultural and ecological knowledge. This day serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving their unique identities, traditions, and contributions to humanity, while also recognizing the challenges they continue to face in protecting their rights and way of life. Comprising 476 million people, that’s 6.2% of the world's population, to think that they are spread across more than 90 countries and, in every region these groups speak over 4,000 languages and hold invaluable traditional knowledge. As a company that’s committed to global impact, The 8Wonder Idea is honoured to support initiatives that empower indigenous voices and traditional knowledge systems. Join us in celebrating the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples by learning more about these incredible communities and how you can get involved. #Innovation #8WonderIdea #GlobalImpact #EmpoweringVoices #TraditionalKnowledge

As we observe Mahashtami and Mahanavami today, I’m reminded of the traditional 𝐊𝐚𝐧𝐲𝐚 𝐏𝐮𝐣𝐚—a beautiful ritual amongst Hindus where young girls are worshipped as symbols of purity and strength. While these cultural practices reflect the deep respect our societies hold for girls, one day of symbolic reverence is not enough. 𝐖𝐞 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐠𝐨 𝐛𝐞𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐝 rituals and provide girls with the environment and opportunities they need to grow, lead, and overcome the many challenges of gender discrimination. This year, as Mahashtami and Mahanavami coincide, it serves as a powerful reminder to renew our commitment to 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐠𝐢𝐫𝐥𝐬 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐞 𝐝𝐚𝐲. At South Asia Young Women in Water (SAYWiW), we are driven by this very mission—to not just acknowledge, but to 𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐰𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩. One of our key objectives is to assist young women water professionals in South Asia with 𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐲𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 and career growth, enabling them to take charge of their futures. Let’s make sure that the worship we offer today is reflected in 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 tomorrow. It’s time to create an 𝐞𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐞𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 for girls where they can thrive, break barriers, and shape the world they want to live in. For potential employers: if you are looking for dynamic, passionate, and skilled young women professionals in water, let’s connect! SAYWiW is proud to support a talented network of young women ready to make a difference. Together, we can ensure that girls don’t just survive, they 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞. #KanyaPuja #GirlsCan #InternationalDayoftheGirlChild #WomenEmpowerment #Mahashtami #Mahanavami #WomenInWater #GenderEquality #SAYWiW #OpportunitiesForWomen #ClimateLeaders #DayoftheGirl

Our journey began with a single belief: 𝐆𝐢𝐫𝐥𝐬 𝐂𝐚𝐧. It was this philosophy that led to the establishment of SAYWiW—an initiative founded to elevate the voices of young women in the water sector and empower the next generation of leaders from South Asia. 𝐆𝐢𝐫𝐥𝐬 𝐂𝐚𝐧: - Break barriers - Lead transformative change - Safeguard the future of our planet From the beginning, #SAYWiW has been committed to creating a platform where young women can rise and shine, particularly in areas like water governance and climate resilience, where their representation has been historically limited. It was an amazing experience to be part of 25 Millenium Fellows of the University for Development studies cohort who partnered together to undertake a project in line with the #MilleniumFellowship organized by United Nations AcademicI mpact and MCN. Our core values as a group are #empowerment and Inclusion because we envision a world where women are empowered and uplifted as equal partners of society to nurture and educate children to champion sustainable ways to protect, restore and promote forest, combat desertification and halt and reverse desertification and biodiversity loss. Our project is called “Tizaa Bonyeni” which literally translates as “We are all one”. We educated and empowered women to be seen as partners of the society and take up the rights and responsibilities of nurturing their children above their physiological needs. This targets SDG 5, achieve #genderequality and empower all women and girls. We believe the empowered women will use their expertise and skills acquire to educate their children on issues of life on land which aims to address SDG 15, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, halt and reverse land degradation, halt biodiversity loss. #Womenempowerement isn’t solely about upholding fundamental human rights; it’s also indispensable for fostering social, economic, and political progress.

Mahatma Gandhi's vision of #sustainable development indeed aligns with the #UnitedNations Sustainable Development Goals (#SDGs) adopted in 2015. His emphasis on local self-reliance and production resonates with #SDG12 on responsible consumption and production, promoting the reduction of reliance on non-renewable resources and fostering sustainability. Gandhi's respect for nature and advocacy for sustainable practices that preserve the environment for future generations are in harmony with SDGs 13 (climate action), 14 (life below water), and 15 (life on land). His commitment to social justice and equality, reflected in his support for eliminating poverty and inequality, aligns with SDGs 1 (no poverty), 2 (zero hunger), and 10 (reduced inequalities). His philosophy of non-violence is relevant to #SDG16, which focuses on peace, justice, and strong institutions. Gandhiji's holistic approach to sustainability, emphasizing local self-sufficiency, respect for nature, social justice, and non-violence offers a valuable framework for addressing 21st-century challenges and inspiring a more sustainable and equitable future for all. Despite limitations, Gandhiji's idea of self-sufficiency continues to be relevant and inspiring, encouraging us to think critically about our #consumption habits, reduce our reliance on non-renewable resources, and support local communities. It is important to balance self-sufficiency with the realities of the modern world and find ways to promote sustainable development and social justice while recognizing the benefits of global interconnectedness. #sdgs #esg #socialjustice #sdg1 #sdg2 #sdg10 #sdg13 #sdg14 #sdg15 #sgd16 #renewableenergy #gandhijayanti #unitednations # #linkedin #ppchattaraj
