Concerns rise over low participation in under 21 year old truck driver apprenticeship program.
Since its launch in July 2022, only 113 motor carriers have applied, falling far short of the expected 1,000 carriers and 3,000 drivers.
The initiative has faced controversy from the beginning. Opponents cite concerns over safety and argue that the root of driver shortages lies in pay and working conditions, not age restrictions.
Despite these challenges, the Biden administration sees apprenticeships as a vital solution to address the ongoing truck driver shortage.
To boost participation, recent legislative changes remove certain restrictions on the program, such as mandatory inward-facing cameras in trucks.
Will these adjustments lead to increased engagement?
