One thing it couldn't do is click the "I am not a robot" box. What would an OpenAI robot look like? Would it burp and hiccup? How about weird hallucinations? It turns out the company has explored building its own humanoid, and well, the robot would have a lot of knowledge at its electronic sensor fingertips.
The vision would be to give AI a robot body...at least, that's the way I look at this. We've certainly seen the various videos from Boston Dynamics with Spot that resembles something from a "Resident Evil" movie, and Atlas, the closest thing right now to a robot human. Google DeepMind has plans to expand into robotics with a reasoning model to boot. Given that OpenAI has its own reasoning model, robotics seems to be the big next frontier.
Given the billions that OpenAI has in its coffers, building a robot with intelligence almost has to be part of the equation. The category is still relatively young, so grabbing market share wouldn't be an enormous challenge. And partnering with someone like a Boston Dynamics would certainly speed things along.
The bigger question is whether people are ready for an intelligent robot. Most of us are still fiddling with chatbots and barely ready for AI agents.
