Automatic emergency braking systems will be required on all "light" vehicles -- passenger cars and trucks with a gross vehicle weight of 10,000 pounds or less -- by 2029. While there is no timetable for when AEBs will be required on trucks, attorney Dave Chludzinski writes that the day is coming nonetheless. Why are truck accidents so destructive and on the rise?🤔 Trucks (also known as commercial motor vehicles) can weigh 20 to 30 times more than passenger cars! 😲 Commercial motor vehicles are also taller with greater ground clearance that can result in smaller passenger vehicles under-riding semitrucks in accidents! 😫 Commercial truck braking capabilities are also an issue. 🤦🏽♀️ A loaded tractor-trailer takes 20% to 40% more distance to stop than a passenger car! 👈 #safety #trucking #transportation #truckdrivers #cdldrivers #drivers

Let's talk #safedriving To avoid accidents, commercial trucks and tractor-trailers need greater distance and time to come to a complete stop. Truck drivers have to be aware of this, especially if driving at high speeds. Under ideal conditions, the FMCSA calculates the stopping distance of semi-trucks vs. cars as follows: A normal passenger vehicle traveling at a speed of 65 miles per hour (100km/hr) would take about 316 feet to stop. For a fully-loaded commercial truck, the stopping distance of it running at 65 miles per hour (100km/hr) is about 525 feet. A truck’s stopping distance increases, even more, when it is hauling a heavy load and/or there are adverse road conditions like snow, ice or rain. Trucks typically weigh 20 to 30 times more than passenger vehicles, with a truck weighing up to 40 tons (80,000 pounds) and a typical passenger vehicle at 2 tons (4,000 pounds). This affects a truck’s acceleration, handling and braking. A truck’s weight also makes it accelerate more quickly going downhill. The safety of the trucks on European roads is in the spotlight after Euro NCAP - For Safer Cars, Vans & Trucks today revealed the first set of results for its brand-new TRUCK SAFE assessment programme. This is the very first time that heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) have been tested for safety. Out of nine trucks assessed, Volvo Trucks FH Aero and FM models both earned a maximum five-star ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ rating, while IVECO’s current S-WAY model emerged as the weakest performer with one ⭐ star. As part of its mission to achieve Vision Zero (eliminating all traffic fatalities and serious injuries), Euro NCAP has turned its testing and safety performance attention to the HGV vehicle category for the first time. The organisation has been helping to drive up safety standards by evaluating and rating the active and passive safety performance of passenger cars for close to 30 years, and launched a similar rating scheme for Light Commercial Vehicles in 2020. Because of their size and weight (gross combination mass of over 3,500 kg), HGV crashes are the most severe on European roads. Although trucks account for less than 3% of the traffic fleet in Europe, they are responsible for 15% of accident fatalities. Furthermore, only 11% of casualties in accidents involving HGVs are truck occupants. The remaining 89% are car and van occupants, as well as Vulnerable Road Users https://lnkd.in/d4wFp__R 𝐀𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐅𝐮𝐥𝐥 𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭: https://lnkd.in/df8UTnee #trucksafety #europesroads #euroncap #trucksafe #hgvtesting #roadsafety #visionzero #heavydutyvehicles #volvotrucks #ivecotrucks #trafficfatalities #safertrucks #vulnerableroadusers #vehicleratings

Euro NCAP’s TRUCK SAFE Results are in! For the first time ever, Euro NCAP has turned its attention to the safety of Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) with the launch of its TRUCK SAFE rating programme—aiming to raise safety standards across the industry and support Vision Zero, the mission to eliminate traffic fatalities. Why It Matters: - HGV crashes are the most severe on European roads, responsible for 15% of accident fatalities despite making up just 3% of the traffic fleet. - 89% of casualties in HGV accidents are other road users like car occupants, cyclists, and pedestrians. - Safer trucks mean safer roads, better outcomes for businesses, and a lower societal cost. The first results: Nine long-haul trucks, representing 95% of the fleet on Europe’s roads, were assessed on Safe Driving, Collision Avoidance, and Post-Crash Safety: - Volvo FH Aero & FM earned 5-star ratings. - The IVECO S-WAY lagged behind with just 1 star. - CitySafe Awards were given to four trucks for outstanding urban safety features, like advanced braking systems to protect cyclists and pedestrians. What’s next? TRUCK SAFE is set to unify truck manufacturers, hauliers, insurers, and road authorities, helping stakeholders select safer vehicles and harmonise best practices across the industry. Centurion Truck Rental is proud to support safety advancements that protect drivers and road users alike. Let’s keep trucking safely! #TRUCKSAFE #HGVSafety #VisionZero #NCAP
