Last month I had the privilege to moderate a panel session titled "Net Zero Targets and leading the Energy Transition" at the Hydrogen Technology Expo North America. It was a fantastic panel that included Werner Ponikwar, CEO of thyssenkrupp nucera, David L. Elam, Jr., VP at TRC Companies, Inc., and Alex Savelli, Managing Director - Hydrogen Technologies at Accelera by Cummins. Our conversation focused on what needs to be done to meet the goal established at COP28 to produce 180 million tons of lower carbon intensity (#LCI) #hydrogen by 2030. We talked about policy, technology acceleration, etc. Some great points from the panel: 1) The need for long-term policy certainty, i.e., #H2 hubs, US 45V (H2 production tax credit), etc. 2) With regards to incentives, the US federal government can offer a single subsidy, but the EU has more than 25 member countries, and it cannot offer tax credits that carry across country borders. Therefore, there could be a patchwork of programs in the EU making it harder for project developers. 3) The need to accelerate approval for critical infrastructure, e.g., in the US approval for injection of #CO2 into the ground for permanent #sequestration (Class VI wells) requires approval from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). (This is true for all states except Wyoming, Louisiana, and North Dakota.) Today these approvals are taking roughly 2 to 2.5 years. This slows down the application of #carboncapture technologies in the production of lower carbon intensity H2 from natural gas. 4) The need for updated modeling tools. For example, the US Dept of Energy's GREET (Greenhouse gases, Regulated Emissions, and Energy Use in Technologies) model assumes a methane leakage rate for natural gas pipelines. This is the only model that can be used to calculate the carbon intensity of H2 when applying for 45V subsidies. This has the potential to impact outcomes ... projects that have more expensive natural gas due to investment to reduce leaks are not rewarded with a higher subsidy, potentially impacting their financial viability. 5) The need for international standards on the carbon intensity of H2 to help facilitate trade. Countries/projects that envision H2 exports need to ensure that the H2 they produce would meet key standards in other countries. Alex presented policy recommendations from the B20 Brasil’s Energy Transition and Climate Change Task Force, co-chaired by our CEO Jimmy Samartzis. The recommendations focused on mechanisms to leverage sustainable biomass and biofuels to address climate change, including: ▪ Establishing blending mandates to promote the use of sustainable fuels, including Sustainable Aviation Fuel (#SAF) ▪ Implementing policies to promote global and diversified bioenergy supply chains ▪ Setting up regulations and providing investments to scale new bioenergy applications like SAF At LanzaJet, we recognize that tackling global energy and climate challenges requires coordinated efforts across borders and sectors. Great article by the Rocky Mountain institute on the potential of green hydrogen to decarbonize hard to abate sectors like heavy industry and transport. What are the lessons for African economies and the private sector from this opportunity? Many companies must balance day to day priorities vs strategic thinking for long term growth, and this can lead to missing the bus on many emering green and renewable technologies like green hydrogen.
