🔋 Boosting Community Energy Resilience: Victoria’s 100 Neighbourhood Batteries Program The Victorian Government’s $42 million 100 Neighbourhood Batteries program is a game-changer for local energy resilience and affordability. With the second round of applications now open, the initiative aims to support diverse, low-income, and regional communities by funding batteries that store renewable energy and provide backup during emergencies. 🏡⚡ These neighbourhood batteries, ranging from 20kW to 5MW, give communities control over their energy, reducing bills and enhancing grid stability. They enable local groups, councils, and not-for-profits to create energy hubs that keep the lights on during storms, charge devices, and access hot water. Wind power and tree planting! 🌳 Profits from community windfarm to fund a million native trees in Hebrides. Calum Macdonald, the former Labour MP leading the project, hoped this example could be a model for community owned energy projects across the UK. This project was set up to recycle renewable energy profits into community wealth-building and improvements, he said, in contrast to the large-scale multi-national owned wind farms causing resentment among the communities nearby. In Denmark, about half of turbines are community-owned. Important shifts in the conversation about different ways to engage with regional communities about the changing energy system. In this opinion piece last week Forum member Satya Tanner CEO LAUTEC Group Australia explained how the community ownership opportunity was an important impetus for wind farm developers in Denmark: "(Those) that offered up share options and planning participation to communities were the only ones to successfully construct their projects. So successful that the Danish Government adopted the principle in 2009, requiring developers to offer up to 20% share options to all residents within 4.5km of an onshore wind farm project." EnergyAustralia’s unique approach to community engagement and how it is accelerating the clean energy transition. As one of Australia’s big three generators and retailers, EnergyAustralia takes its role in the national energy transition very seriously. So, what is the organisation doing to help Australia lower its carbon emissions, and how does it ensure the community is engaged in the process? David Wilson, Head of Community Engagement, says a combination of new infrastructure and repurposed sites will see EnergyAustralia make a sizeable contribution to the clean energy transition in coming years. “We try to co-locate a lot of this new energy infrastructure with existing infrastructure, so that it reduces the impact on the community in which it’s delivered. I grew up in rural Essex and now live in semi-rural Cambridgeshire. I completely understand and share the sense of protectiveness people have for landscapes they love. But a country preserved in aspic will immiserate itself. This new report from Friends of the Earth makes clear what should be obvious: there is a huge amount of room for onshore renewables projects, which can be developed without undermining food production or encroaching on National Parks, high grade agricultural land, or precious habitats. This is evident to anyone driving around the East Anglia that I love. It is beautiful, but there is a lot of space and it is also already an industrial landscape (the primary industry is agriculture). It is hugely shaped by human activity and has been for centuries. The case for allowing well-sited renewables developments that can cut energy costs, emissions, and fossil fuel imports has never been clearer. https://lnkd.in/eeCNmr4W

The solar panel rotates to follow the sun, maximising solar absorption and offsetting electricity generation during working hours. This Smartflower system allows them to generate 40% more power compared to a typical fixed system, with no CO2 output. Merlin's commitment to sustainable energy generation is evident through this installation, which is the second in Scotland and the first commercial installation in the country. We are thrilled to share the success of the Aylestone Leisure Centre solar refurbishment project, for Leicester City Council, which has exceeded all expectations just ONE year after installation! Highlights: - 285 MWh of energy generated—surpassing the predicted 250.8 MWh. - 12% greater CO2 savings than forecasted, reducing emissions by 55 tonnes annually (equivalent to planting 1,232 trees!). - Predicted energy cost savings of £74,000, 114% of estimates. - Leicester City Council set to recoup installation costs in just four years. Delivered by Stepnell, in partnership with our renewable specialists Step Energy Procured through Crown Commercial Service this project involved replacing the leaky roof and installing an 828 PV panel system—helping the leisure centre self-generate energy and reduce costs. Hats off to Stepnell. Great to see a solar project that has given considerable thought to the roof safety and future maintenance, nice sizes walkway between the panel runs.
