At COP16Riyadh, in collaboration with the League of Arab States - General Secretariat, we look forward to highlighting the role of ocean ecosystems and blue economies as important pillars to address desertification, land use and water challenges within our regional context. Desertification leads to an increased dependence on blue economies, significantly reducing land productivity and freshwater resources; societies depend heavily on marine resources as a pathway for economic stability, food security and environmental resilience. In discussion with leading experts from IUCN, المركز الوطني لتنمية الغطاء النباتي ومكافحة التصحر NCVC, Goumbook, Ambition Loop, Red Sea Global, NCECKSA, Fugro, Roland Berger - this session will uncover practical strategies for sustainable land and coastal zone management, to combat desertification and enhance socio-ecological resilience across the MENA region. Bridging land, water and ocean sustainability further addresses the missing link between the three #rioconventions — UNFCCC UN, United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), and UN Convention to Combat Desertification. World Environment Day, the largest international day dedicated to the environment was celebrated on June 5th. Led by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and held annually since 1973. In 2024, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia hosted World Environment Day, focusing on critical themes such as land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience. This year's theme aligned with the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030), a global rallying call for the protection and revival of ecosystems—essential for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Today I realized that I am immensely satisfied that my work aligns with my dreams of fighting climate change and reducing carbon emissions. Through my work in battery technology for Electric Vehicle Applications. I am trying to best make strides towards a cleaner and greener future. On this #WorldEnvironmentDay, let's unite and contribute to protecting our soil, heritage, and environment. Together, we can make a significant impact in conserving nature and ensuring a #HealthyEarth for future generations. #WorldEnvironmentDay2024 #LandRestoration #Desertification #SustainableDevelopmentGoals #NatureConservation #ClimateAction #CleanEnergy #SustainableFuture #EVTechnology #GreenInnovation YOUNGO YOUNGO Energy Working Group Children and Youth Major Group to UNEP United Nations

**Celebrating World Environment Day 2024: Our Land, Our Future 🌍** Today, as we observe World Environment Day, let's reflect on the critical challenges our planet faces—land degradation, desertification, and drought. Since its inception in 1972, World Environment Day has been a powerful platform for raising awareness and prompting action on pressing environmental issues. This year, under the theme "Our Land. Our Future. We are #GenerationRestoration," we mark the 30th anniversary of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). With up to 40% of the planet's land degraded and the increasing prevalence and severity of droughts, our call to action is more urgent than ever. Land restoration not only supports biodiversity but is crucial for our survival, affecting food security, climate change, and economic stability worldwide. As the 2024 host, Saudi Arabia will spearhead discussions during the sixteenth session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 16) to UNCCD, emphasizing our collective responsibility to foster resilient ecosystems. Geneva, as a hub for environmental governance, plays a pivotal role in this global effort, integrating expertise across various sectors to combat these environmental challenges effectively. Together, we are #GenerationRestoration. Let's commit to restoring our earth for future generations. 🌿 #WorldEnvironmentDay2024 #CombatDesertification #LandRestoration #DroughtResilience #SustainableFuture #EcosystemRestoration #UNCCD #COP16 #SaveOurPlanet #EnvironmentalAwareness

Yesterday marked an important milestone as the city of Amman launched its second Climate Action Plan (CAP), marking a transformative step towards accelerating climate action by setting a roadmap towards becoming carbon neutral by 2050 aligned to the Paris Agreement. The development of CAP has been a partnership between C40 Cities, UNDP and UN-Habitat and personally I enjoyed working with these fantastic partners. Capital of Jordan and a C40 member since 2015, Amman is home to 4.2 million people (43% of Jordan’s population), one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world and a major centre for investment in the Middle East region. However, a slew of climate-related challenges such as change in rainfall patterns leading to flash floods, rising temperatures, and an increase in extreme weather occurrences have left Amman increasingly vulnerable to the ongoing climate crisis. This CAP reflects the Greater Amman Municipality’s commitment and reiterates Amman’s net zero target while integrating climate goals across all its operations in order to enhance the quality of life of the citizens. It also reflects the evolving context of increasing institutional capacities and partnerships for mainstreaming climate change. I congratulate His Excellency Mayor of Amman Dr. Yousef Al-Shawarbeh and the Greater Amman Municipality for visionary leadership that has successfully reflected in strengthening the Climate Action Plan supporting Amman’s ongoing journey of becoming a sustainable and resilient city. https://lnkd.in/djQDJkeH Shruti Narayan Nisreen DaoudNjoud Abdeljawad C40 Cities UNDP UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme)

🌍 Exciting developments from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) remind us of the critical importance of living in harmony with nature to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Inger Andersen, the head of UNEP, recently emphasized at the 162nd meeting of the Committee of Permanent Representatives in Nairobi, Kenya, that a net-zero, pollution-free world is essential for ending hunger, poverty, and ensuring peace, clean energy, and green jobs. 🌱 The UNEP's Medium-Term Strategy for 2022-2025 outlines bold steps to reverse biodiversity loss, climate change, and pollution, paving the way for sustainable development. As we approach the next strategic period (2026-2029), the focus on environmental sustainability becomes even more pivotal. 🔗 Andersen calls for increased support for UNEP to enhance its impact on environmental challenges and stresses the need for more contributors to achieve the SDGs effectively. The organization is also gearing up to co-host the September Africa Climate Summit and to begin the seventh IPCC cycle this July, highlighting its proactive stance on climate action. 🌟 At Bunchful, we are inspired by UNEP’s commitment to a healthier planet and are eager to align our efforts with these global objectives. Let’s continue to support and participate in initiatives that promote a sustainable future. #Sustainability #UNEP #ClimateAction #SDGs #BunchfulCares #GlobalGoals #BunchfulSDGs

On 4 December, Ibrahim Thiaw, Executive Secretary of UNCCD, addressed the Business 4 Land Forum, which was held during the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) COP16 in Riyadh. In his address, he urged the private sector to prioritize sustainable land management within their corporate and financial strategies. As droughts intensify worldwide, and with 40% of the world’s land affected by degradation, the UNCCD warned that the global economy could face a $23 trillion loss by 2050. Businesses are called upon to transform their operations, mobilize funding for land restoration, and collaborate across sectors to mitigate climate and biodiversity challenges. In this context, PAM is reinforcing its engagement on the issue and its cooperation with the UNCCD, as the Assembly was recently granted the status of Permanent Accredited Observer Organization to the Convention. This significant achievement highlights PAM's steadfast commitment to addressing the pressing challenge of desertification, promoting sustainable land management practices, and contributing to the broader global agenda for sustainable development. Looking ahead, PAM will continue to engage with the most important multilateral environmental fora, and especially with the COPs of the three Rio Conventions, including the forthcoming resumed session, in February 2025, of the COP16Riyadh on Biodiversity in Rome, at FAO Headquarters. #UNCCD #COP16 #LandRestoration #SustainableDevelopment Learn More: https://lnkd.in/dadiYdum @United Nations News

NEW BRIEF: This new brief from our #SantiagoNetwork Project provides a debrief of the second advisory board meeting of the #SantiagoNetwork for #LossAndDamage (SNLD) and looks ahead to the SNLD’s third meeting in September and beyond Read it here: https://lnkd.in/eg7gm3RU As climate change impacts continue to escalate in frequency and intensity, the needs of developing countries and the vulnerable people and communities within them are more visible and urgent than ever. The #SantiagoNetwork is one piece in the puzzle of work under and outside the UN Climate Change Convention and its Paris Agreement that is being designed to help developing countries address the adverse effects of climate change through averting, minimising and addressing #LossAndDamage. The #SantiagoNetwork was established under the Warsaw International Mechanism for #LossAndDamage (WIM) at #COP25. It was a response to an urgent need for enhanced action & support for averting, minimising and addressing #LossAndDamage associated with #ClimateChange impacts. The #SantiagoNetwork is mandated to catalyse the technical assistance of relevant organisations, bodies, networks and experts (OBNEs), for the implementation of relevant approaches to #LossAndDamage at the local, national and regional level in developing countries. This brief covers the ongoing work in 2024 towards full operationalisation of the #SantiagoNetwork. It unpacks the second meeting of the Advisory Board (SNAB2) which took place from 2-4 July in Geneva, Switzerland, covering what happened and the way forward. 2nd meeting webpage: https://lnkd.in/etDCgJd7 The brief then provides expectations for the third meeting of the Advisory Board being held from 3-6 Sept. 2024 in Bonn, Germany, before concluding with a timeline outlining the steps to ensure a fully operational SantiagoNetwork by the time Parties arrive in Baku, Azerbaijan for COP29 3rd meeting webpage: https://lnkd.in/eHdWPuvW As COP 29 is fast-approaching and without clarity yet on the timeline for the fourth and subsequent Advisory Board meetings so that progress can continue to be made, the Advisory Board must take stock and consider how it can deliver full operationalisation of the #SantiagoNetwork in 2024. Key will be policies that can ensure a demand-driven network supported by new, additional, predictable and adequate funding to enable the #SantiagoNetwork to meet the scale of the needs as they continue to escalate, fulfilling its role as a key part of the loss and damage architecture that must be designed to deliver climate justice to those on the frontlines of climate change.
