You are too Weak at Decision- Making.... 🚫 - Few of my Relatives said me. ~ During my 12th Standard in School, I choose to join my School Faculty's Accountancy tution classes( around 1 hr away from home), inspite of having two more options which were only about 10- 30 mins away from home . Outcome:- ( Scored the highest marks in Accountancy in my school, overall scored 90+ % in my 12th Board exams.) ~ During my 1st year in College, I decided to work on a Marketing-based internship Younity.in, which was not liked by any of my known people, saying its useless . Outcome:- ( Achieved various performance-based certificates ,got back to back promotions to the role of HR Team Lead Intern, & improved on my leadership & Public Speaking skills by a great extent ,all within a time span of 7 months). ~ After passing 10+2 level school exams, I decided to choose CMA as a professional career option & thereby enrolled in its Foundation level rather than doing CA , which was again disliked by most of the people. Outcome :- ( Cleared my CMA Foundation & Inter level within 1.5 years & now preparing for the CMA Final level along with being a Final year College undergrad). Although most of the times people used to criticize my thoughts & decisions by proclaiming that I am weak at all those stuffs, but Maybe weak decision-Making is my strength or maybe it's just that weak decisions fetches you good results, who knows 🤭!!. Let’s break it down! What Are Accrual Costs? Accrual costs are expenses incurred but not yet paid by the end of an accounting period. Examples include: •Utilities: You receive the service in December but pay the bill in January. •Salaries: Employees work in December, and their pay is processed in January. Consulting Services: A consultant completes work in December but sends the invoice for payment in January. Why Are Accrual Costs Important? Understanding accrual costs is key to accurate financial reporting and helps businesses see the true picture of profitability. By recognizing expenses in the right period, we can make smarter decisions, manage cash flow better, and plan for the future. Plus, following accrual accounting keeps us aligned with important standards, boosting our credibility with investors. Connecting Accrual Costs to Cash Flows and Budgeting: Accrual costs help in cash forecasting by indicating when expenses will be recorded, allowing businesses to anticipate cash needs. Understanding these costs also aids in budgeting, ensuring funds are set aside for future payments. Prepaid Expenses: Prepaid expenses are the opposite of accrual costs. These are payments made for services or goods that will be received in the future. For example, if you pay for a year’s worth of insurance upfront, you recognize that cost over the months as the service is consumed. Getting a handle on accrual costs and prepaid expenses is a game changer. It’s all about understanding the timing of expenses, which helps us navigate our financial journey a little smoother. Comfort Zone Is Your Enemy "A comfort zone is a beautiful place, but nothing ever grows there." - Unknown One of the biggest reasons people are lazy and always want to do everything tomorrow is because they are too comfortable with their lives. They don’t want to change the way things are going. Doing the things that you’re always doing is easy, but it doesn’t lead to the growth that you want. Accountancy Student Spotlight: Rachel Sowa Hometown: Arlington Heights, IL Residence Hall: Flaherty Hall What inspired you to pursue a degree in accounting? After taking Accountancy II with Professor Creighton, I became more aware of the various ways accounting could be applied, such as cost management. I was excited to learn more about the opportunities an accounting major could open up for me, so I decided to attend a presentation about what one can do in accounting! I heard the phrase "accounting is the language of business," which further convinced me to become an accounting major. How has your perception of accounting evolved since starting college? Before college, I had a very limited perception of what accounting was. I just thought of it as being in a cubicle where you work on journal entries all day! However, now I see that there are so many exciting opportunities in the accounting field, whether that's through audit, tax, consulting, or something else. I'm especially excited about incorporating data analytics and utilizing software like Excel and Tableau! What is your favorite class you've taken and why? I've had very positive experiences in all my accounting courses, although my favorite so far is Business Communication. I greatly enjoy giving presentations, interacting with others, and designing fun slides! What did you like best about your summer internship? What was the most important takeaway from such an experience? My favorite thing about my summer internship in tax at EY was the ability to learn more about others' career paths and interests. As someone who is still figuring out what I exactly want to do, it was helpful to hear others tell their story about how they've gotten to this point. Consequently, my biggest takeaway is to not be afraid to ask questions and get to know your coworkers! What advice do you have for other students aspiring to pursue a career in accounting? Keep exploring the various opportunities that are out there! There are so many sub-sectors of accounting service lines to learn about. In one of my summer internships, I was able to rotate between the audit, tax, and consulting service lines at EY which was really helpful for me to gain a basic understanding of the responsibilities that each has.

As it's Youth Employment Week, I wanted to share some top tips for aspiring young Accountants on Starting Your Finance Career 🚀 1. Get Some Experience 🌟 The hardest job to secure in your finance career is often your first, so give yourself the best possible chance by trying to gain some experience. Whether that be through a placement year, an internship during the summer holidays or doing a couple of hours for a local practice on a Saturday morning, having some form of experience will give you a much stronger chance of securing a role, plus starts to give you a feel for whether the profession is for you. 2. Qualifications 📝 Completing your chartered or AAT studies isn't essential in building a career in finance, but it does give you credibility and opens up a lot more doors in the future, so I'd strongly encourage you to get them under your belt. That being said...⏬ 3. Do Not Pay For Your Studies ❌💷 Employers in the world of finance, whether that be in practice or industry, usually offer study support packages, meaning your exams, study materials and often training courses are fully funded by your employer. Self-funding your chartered studies would cost somewhere in the thousands over the course of your qualification, so save your hard earned money and find a role where study support is offered. If it's not clear on a job advert, be sure to ask at interview. 4. Build Your IT Skills 💻 Accounting packages, Excel, Power BI - there's an ever growing list of software and tech tools that are used in the finance profession, so starting to learn your way around things like Excel will give you a great head start. 5. Develop Your Soft Skills 🤝 Despite what the stereotypes might be, Accountants aren't the boring ones sat in the corner. Finance is a crucial, value adding function within any business and whether it be building relationships with suppliers in your early days working in accounts payable, through to being able to present financials to the board in your later career, accountancy is much more of a people facing role than you might initially expect, so honing those soft skills is key. How was first week of work resumption for you?? After going for the holidays and the information was passed that I would be resuming work one the 6th of January 2025, I wasn't full of joy. I really wanted the date of work resumption to be extended further because December was fully booked for me. there was a lot of activities that I didn't have enough time to rest talk more of having time for my self. As the days went by, I kept on reminding myself that work resumption is getting more closer and closer. Everytime I set out a particular day for myself, something else would come up and that's it. I had to put a hold to every other activities so that I could have a "ME TIME". For me this first week of resumption was stress free. I know that the coming weeks there would be a lot of engagement and works to do. How then can you and I navigate each week for us to be productive and stress free 📍 Prioritize your health: Even as you navigate through another year of work activities make sure your health comes first. Stay hydrated, eat healty, go for check up, get some rest and if you have enough time engage in exercise. 📍 Don't lose your joy: yes there would be a lot of up and down in your work space but in all don't lose your joy. don't allow sadness to feel your hear. Stay Jiggy 📍 Have a ME TIME: pick a day just for yourself alone. no extra activities, no third or second party. Just yourself 📍 Believe in yourself: There would be a lot of project and tasks and you have to go with the mindset that I CAN DO IT. Failure is never an option. 📍Be Positive and worry less: positivity is a key. Being positive makes you confidence and strong, worry doesn't bring about any solution it only makes you loose your self esteem. In all your do, trust God and the vision you carry.
