I chose my major by alphabetical order. True story. It was the last day to submit Business School registration (thank goodness my friend told me so!) and I hadn't thought through what I wanted to major in. Someone told me I could change once I was in, so I numbered my preferences in alphabetical order - Accounting came first. Once in the business school, it became apparent that changing majors would require an additional semester and I was NOT interested in more school. So I stuck with it, did well, was highly recruited for an internship, and BAM - started my accounting career at Deloitte upon graduation. Not everyone (maybe no one?) has their life and career figured out by 19 years old. Serendipity plays a big role in who we meet, paths we choose, and experiences we are exposed to. Clarity helps you make your next best choice. Action (in this case, picking a major and moving forward in it) provides feedback to see if your choice is working or not. Most of us want clarity before action, but often times action is required to gain clarity. My 16 years in corporate accounting provided the financial security, exposure, experience, network, and ability to create the fulfilling coaching business I have today. There was a time where I felt I had "wasted" those years doing something I never really wanted. But the reality is, that time made me into who I am today. TAKE ACTION. GAIN CLARITY. ADJUST. TAKE ACTION AGAIN. While I don't recommend spending 16 years in a career you don't love, there is value in whatever experience you are in today. And it is NEVER too late to make a change. Do your best, take note of what is working and what isn't, and adjust accordingly. Today I get to combine my experiences and offer Personal Development courses for CPE credits for CPAs! Well said and done! Major does not define a career. Finance major, criminal justice minor, MBA with marketing concentration. 24 years in IT, now using finance knowledge for financial coaching.
