Did you know that horticulture is not only essential for growing plants but also plays a crucial role in tackling climate change, enhancing biodiversity, and promoting sustainability? 🌍💚 Here’s why horticulture matters: 🌿 Environmental Impact: Plants help absorb CO2, reducing our carbon footprint and improving air quality. Smart irrigation and sustainable farming practices save water and protect natural resources. Green spaces and native plants support wildlife and pollinators, maintaining ecosystem balance. 💼 Exciting Careers in Horticulture: Plant Pathologists study plant diseases and develop solutions to ensure healthy crops. Greenhouse Managers oversee controlled environments to optimize plant growth and increase yields. Landscape Designers create beautiful and sustainable outdoor spaces that improve communities. Endless Opportunities include urban farming, sustainability consulting, research, and more! 🌍 How You Can Contribute: 1️⃣ Start Your Own Garden: Plant native species to support local ecosystems. 2️⃣ Join a Community Garden: Learn and contribute to local food systems. 3️⃣ Support Sustainable Products: Choose eco-friendly gardening tools and products. 4️⃣ Spread the Word: Educate others about the importance of horticulture. I'm honored to be speaking at the Florida Composting Council's Annual Conference this week in Orlando. My topic: Compost Use in the Urban Landscape I'm focusing on helping compost makers connect with landscaping professionals to increase compost use in Florida. This topic is of particular interest to me because it will be a huge step towards more sustainable landscapes. As the population of our state continues to increase, wild areas are being removed in favor of development at an alarming rate. Our state's unique ecosystem (flora and fauna) depends on these urban spaces for their survival. A successful landscape starts with healthy soil life, building health from the tips of the plant roots to the tree canopy. Microbes to macro-organisms depend on the health of the soil as the foundation for the food web. Our current landscaping common practices are not able to support wildlife to merely survive, let alone thrive. The use of compost in new developments, new landscape installations, and the continued regular application of compost as a part of ecological landscape management should be a widespread practice amongst the landscaping industry professionals. The improvement in soil health will directly result in improved plant health and appearance with a reduction in the need for inputs of irrigation and fertilizer, and a reduction in landscape replacement due to plant failure.

#snsinstitutions #snsdesignthinkers #snsdesignthinking A greenhouse is a structure made of transparent or translucent materials, such as glass or plastic, in which plants are grown under controlled conditions. It's like a mini indoor garden, protected from harsh weather and extreme temperatures. Greenhouses work by: 1. Trapping sunlight and heat 2. Maintaining high humidity 3. Regulating temperature 4. Providing shelter from wind and frost This allows for: 1. Year-round plant growth 2. Extended growing seasons 3. Improved crop yields 4. Protection from pests and diseases Greenhouses are used for: 1. Gardening and horticulture 2. Agriculture and farming 3. Research and education 4. Conservation and sustainability They're a wonderful way to bring nature indoors and create a sustainable environment for plants to thrive!
