Last week for Green Careers Week, Sarah Ellison, our sustainability lead, joined a panel of local employers to speak to The Sheffield College students about what green careers are and how to develop the green skills that are increasingly important in the workplace. 🍃 Sarah gave an overview of the greener NHS programme, what a transition to a net zero healthcare provider involves and, most importantly, what skills we need now and in the future to support greener, cleaner and more sustainable mental healthcare delivery. It is vital that our whole communities are not only aware of climate change and the actions required to combat it, but also aware of the huge task required to ensure employees are ready and willing to be reskilled or upskilled to meet the needs of the future. That's why Green Careers Week is all about promoting careers that genuinely will make a difference, contributing to healthier people and a healthier planet. 🌍

Green careers should be for everyone. That is what Groundwork aspired to showcase with the #NewToNature programme; championing that young people from all backgrounds should be encouraged and supported to work in the green sector, to be a #ForceOfNature. Being able to influence positive change isn't something that should apply only to a certain type of job that only a certain type of person is suited to. Yes, green jobs are rangers and ecologists doing on-the-ground work, but they are also: - finance managers promoting #GreenFinance - engineers designing energy or water efficient products - retail buyers considering a product's #CarbonFootprint ...and so many more. You can be a force of nature. Not sure how a green career integrates with your sector? Green Careers Week takes place between November 4 and 9. It's designed to promote careers in green industries and to drive up aspirations, especially for young people. Of course, this fits perfectly within my own business model. The Spark Group exists to promote a new green workforce and to work with schools and colleges to help young people to discover their spark. Spark Projects aim to create a new workforce to support green industries in my home area of North Staffordshire and across the UK. The government's Net Zero Strategy has an ambition to support 440,000 green jobs by 2030. The Green Alliance say "young people are enthusiastic about working in green jobs, viewing them as modern, high skilled and interesting. "The net zero transition will create demand for new jobs and skills across all sectors of the UK economy. New entrants to the green jobs market will be needed to meet this demand." In addition, there are there are currently 794,000 young people between the ages of 16 and 24 not in education, employment or training (NEET), according to the Office of National Statistics. My vision involves supporting these youngsters into careers - are you ready to join me in the green revolution? #ecofriendly #greencareers #jobs
