Directors, Boards, and Shareholders Where is the Focus and the Balance? Profit-Making, Profit-Taking, and 'Good Business.' Growing up in the trade and consumer marketing departments of the multi-national consumer marketing giant Lever Bros, Unilever, in the detergents (Surf, Omo, Good & Clean & Fresh, Sunlight), dish wash liquids (Sunlight), auto dish wash liquids (Sun), bath soaps (Lux, Sunlight, Vinolia, Breeze), and laundry soap (Sunlight) markets, I learned that profit-making and profit-taking are good. But never at the expense of the consumer, the business partners (suppliers), the environment, or other stakeholders. It is about 'good business.' And 'good business' made 'good business sense.' It is not solely about the numbers. It's A Paradigm Shift. It’s like other parts of the world: this notion of doing well and doing good, the short term versus the long term, and a different timeframe for expecting results. It’s short-term thinking versus sustainability and longer-term thinking. In Lever Bros, Unilever South Africa, we dominated and retained market leadership in 8 of the 9 market categories. Proft-making, profit-taking, and doing 'good' business, makes good business sense. #self-discipline #mandelamoments #westpoint #leadingboldly
