Congratulations to Transport for NSW on delivering a robust draft Hunter Strategic Regional Integrated Transport Plan. Perhaps we could simplify the name to the Hunter Transport Plan, which I suspect we will all call it as the current name is a mouthful. Like the Hunter Regional Plan 2041, it would benefit from explicitly using the term 15-minute neighbourhoods, especially given the draft plan’s strong focus on walkable communities, local trip alternatives, and reducing car dependency. The draft plan has a focus on the concept, without using the term. The plan also aligns well with the Hunter Regional Plan 2041 by acknowledging the transformative scale of change in Regionally Significant Growth Areas like Anambah to Branxton, North West Lake Macquarie, and Morisset. These areas are crucial to sustainably growing the Hunter to well beyond 1 million residents. The data in the plan highlights the challenges and opportunities for improving public transport accessibility. The public transport accessibility levels in the Hunter are truly sobering. Anyone who has caught Bus 11, which connects Newcastle City, the University of Newcastle, John Hunter Hospital, and Charlestown, wouldn’t be surprised it recorded 83,000 trips in March - more than any rail station except Newcastle Interchange. Even Bus 14, running between Swansea Heads and Newcastle, outperformed almost all rail stations. Could these high-performing routes become a foundation for Bus-Oriented Development? Or even guide future long-term light rail expansions beyond Broadmeadow?

Thanks to the work of the Pyrmont Peninsula Public Transport Forum, Transport for NSW (Transport) has continued investigations into possible adjustments to route 389 in Pyrmont. This is an exciting development as the changes to bus route 389 in the Pyrmont area will address passenger feedback, improve access to Darling Harbour and the Maritime Museum, and provide improved interchange opportunities between bus and light rail services. To accommodate these changes, it is planned to make changes to kerbside parking and loading arrangements on Murray Street north of Pyrmont Bridge Road. Brisbane is one of Australia’s fastest-growing cities, with our population surging by 21% over the past decade, outpacing cities like Sydney, Melbourne, Auckland, and Hong Kong. This rapid growth, along another 1.55 million people who are expected to move to Brisbane by 2041 is driving the need for expanded transport infrastructure to support the increasing demand on the network. Hampshire County Council leaves Solent Solent Transport coalition. The future of Solent Transport has been thrown into doubt following the decision by Hampshire County Council to leave the local transport coalition. Solent Transport is a coalition of local authorities originally comprising Hampshire County Council, Southampton City Council, Portsmouth City Council and the Isle of Wight Council. The partnership provides leadership, strategy and direction to deliver transport improvements across south Hampshire and the Isle of Wight and improve the movement of people and goods across the area. Its flagship programme is implementation of the £28.8m DfT funded Future Transport Zone (FTZ). The Solent FTZ provides real-world testing for experts, allowing them to work with a range of local organisations such as councils, hospitals, airports and universities to test and trial innovative ways to transport people and goods. The FTZ works alongside other local authority led schemes. The crux of the issue is that Solent Transport receives funding to cover its administrative costs based on the population, with Hampshire contributing 45%, Portsmouth and Southampton 20% each and the Isle of Wight the remaining 15%... The City of Abbotsford and BC Transit, in partnership with the Province of BC, are pleased to announce the completion of the Montrose Avenue Transit Exchange, which opened for service in November. The La Crosse Area Chamber of Commerce hosted our November Forum focused on the “State of Our Ports.” This two-part series highlighted key developments for our region’s transportation and economy. In part one, Jeffrey S. Tripp, A.A.E., ACE, Director of the La Crosse Regional Airport, shared plans for the airport’s strategic growth, including the addition of new carriers and an infrastructure upgrade. Part two shifted focus to the Mississippi River’s role in our economy. Bob Gollnik from the La Crosse Regional Planning Committee and Adam Binsfeld, President of Brennan Marine Inc., discussed how our local harbor impacts economic activity. Travis Black, Director of Inland Waterways at the Federal DOT, also provided valuable insights into national trends and available grant opportunities for infrastructure development. 🐝 Exciting developments are underway as TFGM explores the possibility of an underground cross-city line, as detailed in the Draft Rapid Transit Strategy (July 2024). 🚇 Initial studies have examined tunnel options to facilitate connections between existing rapid transit lines, enabling integrated services across the Regional Centre. These proposed 'Regional Metro' solutions draw inspiration from systems like Munich S-Bahn, Paris's RER, and London’s Elizabeth line. Some variants could resemble Thameslink, enhancing connectivity across wider regions akin to its London and South East counterpart. 📈 Addressing the long-term capacity of rapid transit in the Regional Centre is pivotal for fostering ongoing economic growth across Greater Manchester, the North, and the UK.
