In Germany, some politicians and legacy automakers alike praise the idea of "Technologieoffenheit." On the surface, it sounds reasonable—keep an open mind, let the market or the customer decide what they want. But when we look at this from the perspective of decision analysis, it reveals itself as a flawed approach. Are We Too Open? "Technologieoffenheit" is often held up as a virtue in corporate and political environments—let's stay open to all technologies! It sounds clever, right? In decision analysis, keeping options open is indeed valuable during the exploratory phase. It's about understanding the full range of possibilities and not getting locked into a suboptimal path too early. But, and here’s the critical part, there’s a point where you need to evaluate, choose, and commit. What we're seeing, especially in the debate around electric vehicles (EVs), is the misuse of this concept to justify indecisiveness. And let’s be honest—"Technologieoffenheit" is being used by legacy automakers as a strategy to slow down EV adoption, and by politicians to avoid alienating voters who fear change. It's not just a cynical tactic, though—it’s also bad decision-making. By refusing to commit, they’re not just stalling; they’re making suboptimal choices that risk our industrial future. Technology openness should be about staying unbiased at the start, but it must end with decisive action—knowing when to close the door on inferior options and focus on what’s actually going to achieve your goals. Is "Technologieoffenheit" true open-mindedness, or are we just afraid to make the leap? At what point does keeping our options open stop being smart and start being an excuse to stand still? Let’s stop pretending that we can move forward without eventually committing to a path. That's not science fiction: it's happening now with the development of electrified roads. Sweden is already testing these roads, which could reduce private EV battery sizes by up to 70%, and the U.S. is planning its first electrified highway in Detroit. My partner EnBW is also leading the way by testing wireless charging for electric buses in collaboration with ElectReon. Their test track in Karlsruhe uses induction coils embedded in the pavement to charge buses while they move, and by 2030, the government aims for 50% of all buses in Germany to be electric- so this would be great! However, inductive charging does have some challenges, like the need for precise vehicle positioning to ensure efficient charging. There are also concerns about stray magnetic fields, which require careful management to keep things safe. With EnBW's HyperNetz already offering access to 700,000 charging points in 17 countries, we're seeing major strides in infrastructure. China, the USA and Europe met in Frankfurt this week….at the Europe-China New Energy Vehicle Technology Conference 2024, leaders from all continents talked battery business.   I was giving a keynote on "Cross Continent Industry Collaboration in E-Mobility and Battery Technology". In my talk, I emphasized the importance to unite all disciplines to build a thriving European EV-ecosystem (batteries, charging infrastructure, digitalization …).   In Europe we see serious complications in many fields at the moment: ➡ OEMs are seriously discussing the shut-down factories (e.g. VW, Audi, …). ➡ almost all giga-factory projects are cut short, postposted, on hold or cancelled altogether. ➡and most important: we are tangled up in debates while missing the overall ambition to take the risk on going in one direction, FORWARD #innovation   Europe needs to step over it's inherited arrogance that we (Europe) are the world leaders in automotive and realize, that only together we can make it BACK into the game. In short. We need to 🤝 collaborate, not to 👊 compete. Too idealistic? Maybe. Feel free to propose a better (practical) solution if you have one.   As Tom Boetticher brought to the point in his 10 min YouTube-reflexion (https://lnkd.in/eKAeJx65) on the German auto and battery industry: ➡Focus on getting one production line right, that lives up to the global standards. ➡Concentrate (back) on long-term investments (yes, this requires true leaders that are willing to accept ROI with more than 4-5 years payback time) ➡Cooperate and collaborate with the competences that are already there. Like the Chinese leaned from us how to build cars, we now got to learn how to build batteries, simple as that. ➡Keep on innovating. Gartner research shows that disruptive technologies enter the public consciousness with a bang—with excitement evaporating quickly when proofs of concept fail to deliver in real-world settings or can’t be made commercially viable. But when investment continues, technologies advance, costs come down, and new applications come into focus. Those that understand Gartner’s Hype Cycle and continue to pay attention—they’ll seize the early-mover advantage. Even if EVs can’t support your freight today, be watching and learning. Build relationships. With profits down 26.7% this year, the premium manufacturer is forced to consider alternative powertrains such as hybrids and combustion engines for upcoming models     🚨 Robin Zeng, Founder & CEO of Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited at Nicolai Tangen, Norges Bank Investment Management   ↳ Mr. Zeng points out challenges that EU battery manufacturers face in scaling production, which he attributes to misunderstandings "they have a wrong design, a wrong process and wrong equipment". He believes these companies lack a deep grasp of electrochemical principles, which affects product reliability and safety when scaling up   ☝🏽These are just some of the alarming news, which has to be treated with respect, but don’t forget, the journey is the destination!
