Evolving Innovation: Insights from Einstein to Today's Tech Landscape "Innovation is a particularly sticky problem because it so often remains undefined." A sentiment echoed by Albert Einstein, who famously noted the importance of meticulously defining a problem before attempting to solve it. This principle, highlighted in Greg Satell's insightful 2013 Harvard Business Review article, "Before You Innovate, Ask the Right Questions," remains profoundly relevant today, offering timeless guidance in the ever-evolving landscape of innovation. Satell categorizes innovation into four distinct quadrants as reflected below based on two pivotal questions: How well is the problem defined, and who is best placed to solve it? 🌐 Basic Research is the quest for new knowledge, where neither the problem nor the solution is well defined. Consider the endeavors of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), whose Large Hadron Collider experiments aim to uncover the fundamental particles of the universe. Such ambitious projects epitomize basic research's drive to push the frontiers of human knowledge, often leading to unforeseen applications and technologies. 🌐 Breakthrough Innovation involves solving well-defined problems that have resisted conventional solutions, often requiring a cross-disciplinary approach. A prime example is the development of CRISPR-Cas9, a groundbreaking gene-editing technology. By synthesizing biology and technology, scientists have created a tool with the potential to cure genetic diseases, revolutionize agriculture, and more, embodying the essence of breakthrough innovation through the convergence of diverse scientific fields. 🌐 Sustaining Innovation focuses on iterative improvements to existing technologies or processes. The evolution of electric vehicles (EVs) demonstrates this category well. Companies like Tesla have not reinvented the wheel but have significantly improved battery technology, energy efficiency, and user interface to make EVs more desirable and accessible, thereby sustaining innovation by enhancing the performance and appeal of existing automotive concepts. 🌐 Disruptive Innovation targets creating new markets or reshaping existing ones by introducing novel products or services that change the game. The rise of fintech companies like Stripe and Square disrupts traditional financial services by offering more accessible, user-friendly payment processing solutions, enabling small businesses and individuals to compete in the digital economy. This nuanced approach ensures that innovation efforts are not just shot in the dark but are directed towards solving real, tangible problems in society and industry, ensuring that our efforts lead to breakthroughs that benefit humanity as a whole. On Point: Innovation & Startups Julie Garlikov on improving the user experience in diagnostic testing. - Innovation is often rooted in novel technologies, but it only becomes game changing when it is combined with simple solutions that provide a better user experience. - The current user experience for diagnostic testing is terrible. Make an appointment. Take off work. Go to a doctor. Doctor refers you to a lab. Go to the lab. Wait for the result. You could be waiting to find out if you have cancer. - Sherlock Biosciences has incredible technology – synthetic biology, CRISPR, AI. Julie Garlikov knows that, but she also knows consumers don’t really care. They care about the new experience. Get a test. Take a test. Know the result. - Watch this video https://bit.ly/3TcgkQu Watch the full episode https://bit.ly/3t5xVPs MassMEDIC

Last week, I had the pleasure of participating in VivaTech 2024 with Maÿlis G. in Paris! It's incredible to see how innovation advances from one year to the next! My observations: 👁AI predominates and has been integrated into most companies. 🔬The medtech and greentech sectors are growing. ♀️Inclusion and diversity in tech teams remain a priority for many companies! 👉IT Sales and Infrastructure profiles are in high demand! 🧠In a world where AI is increasingly prevalent, we are seeking more human and non-technical skills in the workplace. These will be increasingly valued in tech companies. It's amazing to have the opportunity at these events to meet people who are passionate about what they do and to see that humanity continues to surpass itself year after year! #vivatech #AI

The power of partnerships for healthtech innovation. (The awesome acronyms don't hurt either.) >>> The TLDR: it's a nearly $50M federal award for a research team at Case Western Reserve University to "begin work on engineering, growing and commercializing 'live' replacement joints" to treat osteoarthritis. The "OMEGA Team" includes CWRU, Colorado State University, The Ohio State University, Rice University and Washington State University--as well as Sapphiros AI Bio, University Hospitals, the Louis Stokes Cleveland Vamc, and Massachusetts General Hospital. (OMEGA refers to Orchestrating Multifaceted Engineering for Growing Artificial joints.) It's full of alpha scientists. The award is part of DHHS's Novel Innovations for Tissue Regeneration in Osteoarthritis (NITRO) program. It's designed to boost projects that address health problems that defy traditional research or regular commercial activity. The goal is clear: "solutions . . . to benefit everyone." With the help Ohio Life Sciences, OhioX, UH, The MetroHealth System (Cleveland, OH), Cleveland Clinic and the vibrant work of so many biotech and medtech companies, Cleveland (and NEOhio) definitely rocks.
