🌊 Shall we speak about sustainable sailing? ⛵ While sails are the iconic feature of these magnificent vessels, their reliance on wind power is complemented by modern technology to ensure a seamless and enjoyable sailing experience. 🔹 Primary Propulsion: Sails remain the primary source of propulsion, harnessing wind power to drive the yacht forward. The art of sailing lies in effectively managing the sails to maximize speed and efficiency. 🔹 Auxiliary Engines: Most sailing yachts are equipped with auxiliary engines. These engines are crucial for maneuvering in harbors, navigating calm seas, or when wind conditions are unfavorable. 🔹 Hybrid Systems: Advances in technology have introduced hybrid propulsion systems. These systems combine traditional sail power with electric or diesel engines, offering flexibility and reducing environmental impact. 🔹 Energy Efficiency: Sailing yachts are known for their energy efficiency, utilizing renewable wind energy. This not only makes for an eco-friendly voyage but also reduces fuel costs and emissions. Although these yachts cannot rely solely on sails, combining sail power with modern technology creates a form of sustainable sailing. This blend allows for eco-friendly journeys without compromising on performance or convenience. #YachtManagement #SailingYachts #MaritimeInnovation #SustainableSailing #SiriusMaritimeGroup

Although this shows the potential of electric boating for some, this also shows the consumption of energy needed for such speeds. Our highly efficient electric daytenders make only a limited speed of around 4,5NM/h, which is above maximum for our Dutch inland waterways, but doing so we can make 27 nautical miles with one 4kWh battery. The 6 times higher speed consumes, in this example 27 times the amount of energy needed. I highly respect and appreciate the potential of this technology but if we really care about the environment we should focus on efficiency and behaviour first and performance second. https://lnkd.in/e-g4h_Tz

Everyday here in Barcelona at the America’s Cup sailing competition I’m blown away by the amazing technology development in the sport. Check out the simple iPhone video I took of competitors today doing a practice run for a race in mild wind conditions. There is no question that the innovative advancements evident here are making their way into commercial shipping and reducing greenhouse gases. Aerospace technology — including advanced aerodynamics, lightweight materials, wind tunnel testing and advanced simulation technology — has revolutionized the sport of America's Cup racing. Today's Cup-class yachts use a wing that is more akin to an airplane's wing or airfoil than to a traditional sail. By travelling at an angle to the true wind the combined apparent wind becomes bigger than the true wind, enabling boats to travel faster than the true wind speed. The America's Cup is a technological challenge and the AC75, a 75-foot flying monohull capable of reaching speeds close to 100 km per hour, represents the state of the art of innovation and naval design destined to leave a mark in the yachting industry and in the broader shipping industry of the near future. In fact, it’s already happening. From a Euroweekly news article this week (https://lnkd.in/gxB8WSzZ): In a groundbreaking moment for sustainable shipping, the world’s largest wind-powered cargo ship, Anemos, has commenced its first transatlantic journey. This vessel, designed to significantly reduce carbon emissions in maritime transport, represents a bold step forward in the global effort to decarbonize shipping. The ship is projected to achieve a 95 per cent reduction in CO2 emissions compared to traditional container ships. Constructed by Piriou, a French shipbuilding company, Anemos is the culmination of over two years of meticulous design and construction. It relies on advanced sail technology, which draws inspiration from ocean racing to maximise wind efficiency and minimise reliance on fossil fuels. Anemos embarked on its maiden voyage earlier this month from Concarneau, a coastal town in Southern Brittany, France. The 81-metre-long ship is now on its way to New York, carrying 1,000 tonnes of high-value cargo, including products from coffee importers and French cognac producers. How might advances in sailing technology change the shipping industry as the world decarbonizes? WITHOUT LEAVING ANYONE BEHIND: HUMANITY AT AN ENERGY CROSSROADS, our climate and energy transition documentary film, will be screened at ENERGY DISRUPTORS UNITE 2024 in Calgary October 2 (see: https://lnkd.in/g2kMdpvA). Our film will be available worldwide via pay-per-view streaming in October. A followup docuseries is in the works. Some docuseries sponsorship/investment opportunities remain.
