🌊 Shall we speak about sustainable sailing? ⛵ While sails are the iconic feature of these magnificent vessels, their reliance on wind power is complemented by modern technology to ensure a seamless and enjoyable sailing experience. 🔹 Primary Propulsion: Sails remain the primary source of propulsion, harnessing wind power to drive the yacht forward. The art of sailing lies in effectively managing the sails to maximize speed and efficiency. 🔹 Auxiliary Engines: Most sailing yachts are equipped with auxiliary engines. These engines are crucial for maneuvering in harbors, navigating calm seas, or when wind conditions are unfavorable. 🔹 Hybrid Systems: Advances in technology have introduced hybrid propulsion systems. These systems combine traditional sail power with electric or diesel engines, offering flexibility and reducing environmental impact. 🔹 Energy Efficiency: Sailing yachts are known for their energy efficiency, utilizing renewable wind energy. This not only makes for an eco-friendly voyage but also reduces fuel costs and emissions. Nautor Swan, a Finnish producer of sailing yachts, has selected Propspeed as the standard coating for the propellers and running gear of all Swan Arrow units. Nautor Swan will apply Propspeed on all new Swan Arrow vessels, with existing owners encouraged to adopt the coating for additional protection against fouling and corrosion on underwater metals. The boatbuilder says the decision stems from its focus on sustainable solutions. VESSEL REVIEW: Norwegian boat builder Brødrene Aa recently delivered a new catamaran sightseeing vessel ordered by tour operator Brim Explorer. Named 'Bard', the 26-metre (85-foot) vessel was designed jointly by Hareide Design Mill and Wave Propulsion to be capable of transporting 146 passengers. 'Bard' is also the first vessel in the owner’s fleet built with cabins and a rest area specifically for use by the crew. This will ensure crew comfort on long voyages between the Norwegian mainland and the Svalbard archipelago, in addition to serving as additional lodging during crew changes. With the change of the propulsion setup from a parallel hybrid on Brim Explorer’s previous vessel to a serial hybrid with a direct drive propulsion on 'Bard', the energy efficiency of the propulsion increased significantly, leading to a reduction in fuel consumption of as much as 30 per cent. When operating in hybrid mode, excess heat from the diesel engines is used to help make the saloons’ onboard environment. Full article link in comments.
