As healthcare workers, we should recognize two common communication challenges with elderly patients: over-accommodation and under-accommodation. Over-accommodation happens when we unintentionally stereotype elderly patients, treating them as if they were babies, leading to 'secondary baby talk,' which can frustrate and irritate them. On the other hand, under-accommodation occurs when we fail to account for age-related communication barriers, neglecting the specific needs of the patient. So, how can we avoid these communication barriers? We can do this by avoiding stereotyping and instead, tailoring communication to the patient's individual needs. #healthcareworkers #skillsformed #communication
