📰 ✨ The Global Action Partnership for EPR launches the policy paper "Extended Producer Responsibility: Basic Facts and Key Principles"! At the #WCEF2024, the GAP for EPR launched its new EPR policy paper seeking to answer the question: What are Extended Producer Responsibility schemes, why do they matter and how can they be used to help #BeatPlasticPollution? 🤝 In the lead-up to INC-4, the paper was created with the support of OECD Environment, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, WWF, UN Environment Programme, the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and PREVENT. It provides a digestible overview of EPR, its impact, and potential applications. What are the paper's key takeaways? 🔵 EPR systems have a long history. EPR schemes can increase material recovery and separate waste collection of targeted products 🔵 EPR schemes can help enable a transition to a circular economy. EPR schemes have traditionally focused on waste collection and recycling. Novel fee structures are supporting waste prevention by rewarding producers for more circular product design 🔵 EPR schemes could help meaningfully combat plastic pollution. 🌍 5th Expert Group Meeting on Carbon Removals 🌱 On October 21st, Matthias Matzenberger (CTO, Global C-Sink) attended the 5th Expert Group meeting, aimed at advancing the EU’s Carbon Removal Certification Framework (CRCF). Alongside BioCCS and DACCS, Biochar was a key focus. Key Highlights on Biochar: Certification: The discussion focused on draft technical specifications for certifying biochar in soils, cement, and asphalt, emphasizing long-term permanence. Our European Biochar Certificate guideline will play a critical role in ensuring sustainable biochar production. Existing certification schemes, like Global Biochar C-Sink, can apply for EU recognition, means that existing operators can join CRCF. Value Chain Flexibility: Emphasis was placed on the importance of a flexible value chain with multiple operators (producers, processors, traders), to extend carbon removal innovations across diverse industries - not just biochar producers. Monitoring: The need for robust Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) systems was underscored, particularly for tracking biochar through complex supply chains. Sustainability: Strict sustainability standards were outlined for biochar production, including the use of waste-based feedstocks and efficient production methods. This means clearly prioritizing #prevention, #reduction, and #reuse. 👉 This will require investment in waste prevention and primary plastic reduction, designing for longevity, and building infrastructure for reuse systems. Published letter ➡️ https://lnkd.in/e_4txH-g 2️⃣ ✅ Push back against efforts to limit the treaty’s scope, given that existing multilateral environmental agreements cannot meet the scientific demands of global plastics pollution prevention. 👉 This will require the treaty to designate a dedicated scientific body and insulate it from industry pressure by requiring a robust conflict-of-interest policy and broad regional and Indigenous knowledge holder and multistakeholder representation. Critical aspects in relation to the JRC Plastics LCA methodology and political implications What is this report about? The Joint Research Centre (JRC) is the science and knowledge service of the European Commission (EC). It carries out research in order to provide independent scientific advice and support to European Union (EU) policy. In 2020, the JRC published a study with the title: “LCA of alternative feedstocks for plastic products”, commonly referred to as JRC Plastics LCA method (Nessi et al. 2021. The study describes a methodology developed by the JRC to compare the environmental performance of alternative feedstocks with fossil- based plastic products. Recommendations by the Renewable Carbon Initiative: 1. Investigate the environmental impact of fossil feedstock at the same level of detail as the alternative feedstocks. 2. Require the same proof, sourcing requirements and data provision of all feedstocks. 3. Enable comparisons of novel and established products. 4. Establish a level-playing field in LCA methodology between energy and material use. 5. Acknowledge the value of renewable carbon uptake in cradle-to-gate approaches. 6. Consider the policy interface & landscape of developed methodologies. 7. Include future scenarios or sensitivity analysis 8. Develop concepts to reflect and incorporate positive environmental aspects. 🌍 Our latest article has just been published in "Resources, Recycling and Conservation". In this study, we delve into the climate impacts of traditional methanol production methods via Steam Methane Reforming (SMR) compared to innovative alternatives that convert plastic waste into methanol, namely "Gasiforming" and "Electriforming". 🔍 Our findings highlight how the environmental benefits of these novel methods are significantly influenced by various factors, including the carbon footprint of the local electricity grid and the efficiency and design of the plastic incinerator plants they might replace.
