🍃 Transforming nutrition and health in Lao PDR. Over eight impactful years, the ENUFF project has reduced stunting rates among children under five from 42.3% to 34.6% in 40 targeted villages, catalysing transformation in health and nutrition in Lao PDR. 🎯 A cornerstone of this success has been the collaboration with local structures. District Nutrition Committees coordinated multisectoral responses, while Village Nutrition Teams empowered communities to sustain these improvements. 🏢 🤝 Funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, ENUFF improved nutrition, dietary diversity, and access to clean water and sanitation in Oudomxay and Huaphan provinces. The project reached 60 villages and nearly 6,500 households through an integrated approach encompassing demand creation, social and behavioural change communication, market and supply chain development, and governance strengthening. Key achievements: ✅ Household consumption of diverse, nutritious diets increased from 44% to 60%. ✅ Stunting among children under five decreased from 42% to 34%. ✅ 56 gravity-fed water systems were rehabilitated, benefiting 50 villages. ✅ 59 villages achieved open defecation-free status. 💡 Jean-Gabriel Duss, Regional Director of the Swiss Cooperation Office in Vientiane, stated: ‘𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶-𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗱𝗱𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗻𝘂𝘁𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.’ 📢 Following its significant impact, the project has launched the Basic Nutrition Training Manual to be used as a key tool by the Centre for Nutrition, Lao. Inspiring Results from Lao PDR! The ENUFF project demonstrates what’s possible when a multisectoral approach is paired with a strong governance lens and driven by local leadership. A few key reflections that stand out to me: 1️⃣ Multisectoral Action at Its Best This project brought together health, nutrition, water, sanitation, and market development efforts - showing the power of integrated responses to tackle complex challenges like stunting. 2️⃣ Governance Strengthening as a Game-Changer The focus on building local governance structures like District Nutrition Committees and empowering Village Nutrition Teams ensured not only impactful results but also sustainability. 3️⃣ Locally Led, Locally Sustained The change in nutrition outcomes was catalysed and sustained by local actors and communities themselves - proof that lasting transformation starts from within. These achievements are a testament to collaboration, trust, and the incredible power of locally driven, systems-oriented approaches. What are your reflections on integrating governance and multisectoral approaches in projects like this? Let’s keep this important conversation going!

Save the Children Uganda in partnership with Makerere University School of Public Health (MUSPH) and Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), conducted a formative research study on Urban Adolescent Nutrition in Kampala. The study aimed to describe key dietary practices and food choices of adolescents, develop an ecological model Theory of Change (TOC), and inform a global strategy for promoting healthy diets among adolescents. The findings of the study revealed significant challenges in nutrition practices, such as only 47.2% of adolescents consuming fruits and vegetables weekly, despite 93.7% recognizing their benefits. In a fast-paced world filled with convenience foods and sugary temptations, making conscious choices about what we eat has never been more important. Healthy eating goes beyond calorie counting, it's about nourishing our bodies with essential nutrients, supporting mental well-being, and boosting immunity. A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins fuels our daily activities and reduces the risk of chronic diseases like diabetes, heart disease, and obesity. Choosing wholesome, natural foods is an investment in a healthier, more vibrant future. #Kulyabulungi #Balye #UrbanAdoloscentNutrition

🔔 ARTICLE 🔔 Investigating the effects of food insecurity, self-efficacy, and locus of control on obesity in emerging markets. This research studies the relationships between people's intention to diet, exercise, the locus of control and general and specific #health self-efficacy resulting from Indonesia's lack of food security. The results indicate that study participants struggled to maintain healthy diets and lifestyles and attempted various strategies to compensate for their poor diets. Moreover, the results suggest that food insecurity negatively influences individuals' self-efficacy, subsequently influencing people's intention to exercise and eat healthily. The authors conclude that the #government should develop a mixed downstream and midstream approach, such as a mentoring program, to support self-efficacy and address obesity. ✒ Authors: Denni Arli (University of Tasmania), Andre Pekerti (The University of Queensland), Dr. Ide Bagus Siaputra (University of Surabaya), Svetlana Bogomolova (University of Adelaide), Sharyn Rundle-Thiele (Griffith University). 📝 Curious to learn more? Eating iron-rich beans can significantly improve memory and attention in women, as shown in a study with university students in Rwanda. After 18 weeks of consuming biofortified beans twice a day, participants demonstrated better memory recall and efficiency compared to those who ate regular beans. This highlights the potential of iron-biofortified beans to be a key part of national nutrition strategies across the continent. Incorporating these beans into your diet could be a simple yet powerful way to boost cognitive health and overall well-being. Our Health and Nutrition Capability Lead Dr. PUNEET KHANDUJA participated in a panel discussion at the launch of a policy brief, titled “Enhancing Nutrition Outcomes through India’s Social Safety Net Programs.” Nutrition International hosted the event in New Delhi. It focused on the use of social safety net programs (SSNPs) to improve nutrition outcomes. During the discussion, the panelists explored the potential of SSNPs as a powerful platform to scale up nutrition initiatives and drive innovation, to ensure nutrition security for the vulnerable population. Dr. Khanduja shared insights on the transformation of fair price shops (FPSs) into nutrition hubs or Jan Poshan Kendras (JPK). He emphasized the need to provide a diverse range of nutrient-dense foods, which include fortified staples, millets, cereals, pulses, and dairy products. He also emphasized the need to systematically strengthen SSNPs through: ✅ Social and behavioral change campaigns (SBCC) for nutrition literacy to generate demand for JPK services; ✅ Targeted and innovative nutrition financing within social safety programs and ✅ Strengthened community-based platforms and their use. These include the use of self-help groups (SHGs) and farmer-producer organizations (FPOs) to localize food. We can significantly amplify SSNPs’ impact on nutritional outcomes if we tailor them as nutrition-sensitive interventions. #DietaryDiversity #SSNP #NutritionLiteracy #NutritionSecurity #JanPoshanKendra #Innovationfornutrition #SelfHelpGroups #FairPriceShops #NutritionSecurity #FoodSecurity #PMPOSHAN Nutrition International Gates Foundation ICMR-National Institute of Nutrition IDinsight International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) Mitul Thapliyal Ritesh Rautela Abhishek Jain Dr. Manmohan Singh Dr Preeti Khanna Anirooddha Mukherjee Dipanshi S.
