📢 Read the newly published position paper, co-authored by the Netherlands Working Group on international Nutrition (NWGN) and Clim-Eat, which tackles the complex role of animal-sourced foods (ASFs) in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The paper looks at the tough choices between meeting nutritional needs and managing climate impacts, urging a re-evaluation of the protein transition discussions that are often framed in high-income contexts but are increasingly relevant for LMICs. It calls attention to the nuances of ASF production in these regions, where economic and social realities demand a balance between dietary diversity and environmental sustainability. With growing concerns about climate change and food insecurity, the paper emphasises the urgent need for innovative solutions that support both the nutritional health of vulnerable populations and long-term climate goals. Pedro Arrojo-Agudo, the Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights to Water and Sanitation, emphasised at the 57th UN Human Rights Council session that ‘Using the logic of the market is wrong and inconsistent with a human rights-based approach to water management.' Water, as experts now acknowledge, must be treated as a ‘common good, accessible to all.’ The rights to water, sanitation, and a clean environment are fundamental and indivisible. However, the few with greater economic or political power have far greater capabilities to navigate water insecurity. Fortunately, by recognising existing inequalities, and sharing resources and power, we can take proactive steps at this critical moment – five years into the conclusion of the Sustainable Development Goals – to develop better strategies for distributing and managing water. Together, we must forge fairer and more inclusive pathways to advance: 🔹 equitable and sustainable development, and  🔹 more peaceful societies that enable everyone – both as individuals and as members of communities – to thrive and reach their full potential. 🍃 Transforming nutrition and health in Lao PDR. Over eight impactful years, the ENUFF project has reduced stunting rates among children under five from 42.3% to 34.6% in 40 targeted villages, catalysing transformation in health and nutrition in Lao PDR. 🎯 A cornerstone of this success has been the collaboration with local structures. District Nutrition Committees coordinated multisectoral responses, while Village Nutrition Teams empowered communities to sustain these improvements. 🏢 🤝 Funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, ENUFF improved nutrition, dietary diversity, and access to clean water and sanitation in Oudomxay and Huaphan provinces. The project reached 60 villages and nearly 6,500 households through an integrated approach encompassing demand creation, social and behavioural change communication, market and supply chain development, and governance strengthening. Key achievements:  ✅ Household consumption of diverse, nutritious diets increased from 44% to 60%.  ✅ Stunting among children under five decreased from 42% to 34%.  ✅ 56 gravity-fed water systems were rehabilitated, benefiting 50 villages.  ✅ 59 villages achieved open defecation-free status. 💡 Jean-Gabriel Duss, Regional Director of the Swiss Cooperation Office in Vientiane, stated: ‘𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶-𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗱𝗱𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗻𝘂𝘁𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.’ 📢 Following its significant impact, the project has launched the Basic Nutrition Training Manual to be used as a key tool by the Centre for Nutrition, Lao. Since its launch in 2019, BRILHO Mozambique, funded by the governments of the United Kingdom - FCDO Services and Sweden - Sida and implemented by SNV, has catalysed the off-grid energy market, promoting affordable, efficient, and clean technologies for communities without access to the national grid. To highlight its impact and pave the way forward, BRILHO Mozambique has launched the report '𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳𝗳-𝗴𝗿𝗶𝗱 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗠𝗼𝘇𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗲: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗥𝗜𝗟𝗛𝗢 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗯𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻', showcasing game-changing solutions and enablers to achieve universal energy access by 2030. The complex challenges we face call for fresh perspectives and innovative approaches. Climate change significantly threatens freshwater resources, exacerbating pollution and ecosystem degradation. In 2022, UN-Water reported that only ‘19% of the world’s renewable water resources are being withdrawn, after taking into account environmental flow requirements.’ While water conservation efforts are often voluntary and focus on stewardship, there are few, if any, institutionalised mechanisms for broader accountability. Some issues that require a critical re-examination to transform our water systems include: 🔹 the global overreliance on market mechanisms to manage and rescue our water cycle. 🔹 the inequalities that arise from unequal access to water resources and unchecked pollution. 🔹 the general neglect of conservation efforts, which are often voluntary and poorly regulated. 🌍💧 In Ethiopia, the aftermath of the 2021 armed conflict in the Amhara region has shown us just how high the cost of rebuilding essential systems and services – like water – can be.   The experience in Ethiopia and so many other regions and countries in conflict – today and in the past – demonstrates the importance of conflict prevention, resolution, and collaboration.   In Kebeles (wards) 033 and 034 in the Amhara region, a collaboration between the government of Ethiopia and SNV, supported by USAID, revived previously devastated water infrastructure and introduced system enhancements.
