🌱Biosolutions hold tremendous potential according to the European Commission – Now is the time to unleash that potential🌱   🔬Today, the European Commission with its “Communication on Biotech and Biomanufacturing” has presented a series of actions to boost biotech and biomanufacturing in the EU, thus fulfilling the promise made by Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in her State of the European Union speech in September 2023.   📄Among the Commission’s set of actions are: - Simplified regulatory framework and faster access to market, including launching a study that could lay the foundations for a possible EU Biotech Act. - Better support for scale-up and ease of navigating regulations. - Foster a larger market for biotechnology and biomanufacturing. - Enable fair comparison with fossil-based products. - Encourage more investments.   We welcome these actions and are very pleased with the prospects of an EU Bio Act. This shows how quickly biosolutions are moving up on the EU’s agenda. That is fantastic and something we are proud to contribute to!🙌   🇪🇺As Executive Vice-President of the Commission Mrs Margrethe Vestager said at the press conference “Europe cannot just be the cradle for new solutions, what is born here should also grow up and stay here”. We could not have coined it better👏   💪But we need to deliver quickly and ambitiously on these actions. 🇪🇺 WHAT IS BORN IN EUROPE SHOULD ALSO GROW UP AND STAY IN EUROPE 🇪🇺 The regulatory status quo in Europe prevents the vast potential of the biosolutions sector from being unlocked. Lack of awareness, insufficient access to financing and scaling and a regulatory environment not quite fit for purpose prevents the biotech and biomanufacturing sector from helping us shape a more sustainable, resilient and competitive future for a green Europe. Crucially, the Commission and Executive Vice President Mrs. Magrethe Vestager presented a communication on boosting biotechnology and biomanufacturing in the EU on the 20th of March. In the wake of this landmark communication, it’s clear that the path forward requires action. Europe has a longstanding tradition of providing a good environment for innovations to blossom. The Commission’s recent communication is a testament to this legacy and a step forward in recognizing the critical role biosolutions play for our future. 🌍 Yet we must continue to act. In just two months, the European Parliament will hold elections, where biosolutions must be on the agenda. We have our work cut out for us, as it is not just about keeping these solutions within our borders, but also nurturing an ecosystem where they can grow, scale and ultimately benefit our communities and the planet. 🙌 However, while we celebrate this milestone, it’s imperative that we push for a dedicated European Bio Act. We couldn't agree more. As a UE-born pioneer in the field of food biomanufacturing, we were delighted to see yesterday's published “Communication on Biotech and Biomanufacturing” by the European Commission. It is very encouraging and a long awaited signal for our industry to witness the Commission set out an ambitious vision for Biotech and Biomanufacturing in Europe. We second EuropaBio - the European Association for Bioindustries' message that we need to move quickly from “rhetoric into policy and legislation action for competitiveness, enabling innovators to thrive and grow, and creating long term investment into infrastructures, employment and skills in Europe.” As a member of EuropaBio, Cellular Agriculture Europe, Start Industrie and France Deeptech, we will engage with policymakers and other stakeholders such as the EU Biosolutions coalition in the French and European ecoystems to support the translation of the communication into legislation and regulation, such as an EU Biotech Act. #biotech #biomanufacturing #EUBioAct

Biotech also largely supports Europe’s economy and contribute to our competitiveness, with high growth potential and labour productivity. And by reducing the Europe’s dependency on fossil-based input and other sources of raw materials biotech also increase circularity and strengthen our path towards independence of fossil fuels. With today’s proposal we want to create the right environment for this sector to grow and deliver global solutions to societal and environmental problems." The European Commission has presented a series of actions to boost biotechnology and biomanufacturing in the EU.    “We welcome the EU Commission’s initiative on Biotech and Biomanufacturing. It is an extraordinary step in the right direction and clearly reflects the increasing focus on one of EU’s key enabling sectors. The solutions for a healthier planet and healthier people are already here. We are pleased to see this initiative that helps provide market access for novel solutions and ensure a level playing field between fossil-based and bio-based products,” our CEO Ester Baiget said. Margrethe Vestager, Executive Vice-President at the European Commission, gave her perspective: "Everywhere across Europe, we are faced with the same challenges: Climate change affects us all. 👏🏼YES👏🏼 High ambitions for a bio-revolution in new political guidelines for the next EU term 🌱 The newly re-elected president Ursula von der Leyen states in her political guidelines for the next European Commission 2024-2029 that she wants to "make the most of the biotech revolution" 🚀 - A revolution led by innovative people like all of our brilliant members 💡   We are especially excited for the proposition of a new "European Biotech Act" in 2025 that should make it “easier to bring biotech from the laboratory to factory and then onto the market” 🌱🔬 A tailored regulatory framework for #biosolutions in the EU is an absolute top priority for us. In our opinion there is an urgent need of a SIGNIFICANT paradigm shift towards regulation and legislative framework conditions that prioritize bio-innovation and sustainable solutions based on biotechnology, acknowledging these as fundamental drivers of industrial competitiveness and green transition! Therefore, now is the time for EU to recognize biosolutions, biotech and biomanufacturing as a SEPERATE industry, differentiated from chemical and fossil solutions, and in need of a tailored regulatory policy framework. We are eager to get started and we can’t wait to see what the next term will bring forward for the biosolutions sector - and we will do our best to push and help along the way 🤞🏼

B is for Biosolutions 🌱 and B is for Berlin 🌱 The potential of Biosolutions was clearly recognized in Berlin, Germany this week, where our partner, BIO Deutschland co-organised, a diverse group of stakeholders across ministries, companies, research, and organisations to discuss how biosolutions can strengthen Europe’s sustainability, resilience and competitiveness. Companies from Germany and Denmark AMSilk GmbH | Biotech Materials, @Planet A Food, Corden BioChem GmbH, Innocent Meat , Matr Foods, Novonesis, clearly showed that the solutions are already there, but ⛔ regulatory red tape need to be removed 🔨 large scale up facilities build, and 💰 finance made available for them to stay and/or grow in Europe. The importance was underscored by Dr. Christine Lang, member of the Coalition’s governance board who stated: “We must do everything we can to preserve our livelihoods while remaining economically strong and independent. Biosolutions are the appropriate key to this. "The Future is Biotech" - says EuropaBio - the European Association for Bioindustries during reception in Brussels entitled "Europe's Biotechnology & Biomanufacturing Future" Is it true? 🤔 ABSOLUTELY, due to its versatile applications in #healthcare, #agriculture, #wastemanagement , #foodsafety or #greenenergy production. 🧬 🇪🇺As Kerstin Jorna, Director General at European Commission in DG Grow, highlighted: ✅ Europe has problem with scaling up innovative projects ✅ Single Market Strategy should be used to boost #biotech growth ✅ European budget should be used to de-risk crucial projects in the field ✅ cooperation of public-private cooperation to leverage the competitivness of European economy Since #biotech is one of four pillars of EU economy (according to #STEP) it's crucial now to find and implement in upcoming #BiotechAct ❗️EXACT ❗️tools and solutions that will put above approach to life in order to use the amazing potential of #biotechnology companies from EU. ➡️ With BioForum upcoming presidency in EuropaBio - the European Association for Bioindustries - we have a lot to do in this topic.
