🌍 As world leaders descend on Baku for COP29, it's important to recognise the impact the built environment has on climate change. According to the World Green Building Council, buildings currently account for around 39% of global energy-related CO2 emissions. Climate change represents one of the biggest challenges of our times. That's why at SCIP we prioritise sustainable building practices in our work. We're committed to developing a scheme with strong green credentials that fully aligns with South Cambridgeshire District Council's Business Plan to deliver cleaner, greener, zero-carbon futures for local communities. Our scheme will deliver 72 affordable homes built to #Passivhaus standards, translating to low energy bills for tenants. We also set a target to increase biodiversity net gain (BNG) from the development by 20% (double the mandatory 10%) to help enhance the natural environment in Cambourne. #COP29 #Baku #Environment #Sustainability #SustainableHomes

With COP16 just around the corner, I’m feeling hopeful about what this pivotal moment could mean for two sectors that are vital to the UK’s future: our biodiversity and the construction industry. The UK’s biodiversity has faced significant pressures over the last few decades, with wildlife populations declining and habitats being lost or degraded. COP16 provides a unique opportunity to address these challenges head-on. I’m hopeful we will see strong, legally binding commitments to halt biodiversity loss, alongside greater emphasis on nature-based solutions. By protecting our natural landscapes, such as forests, wetlands, and coastal ecosystems, we can ensure a healthier future for wildlife while also tackling climate change. At the same time, the UK construction industry has a major role to play in shaping a sustainable future. The sector is one of the biggest contributors to carbon emissions, but it’s also a key player in driving innovation and change. COP16 could be a catalyst for the industry to embrace greener building standards, decarbonise supply chains, and adopt a circular economy approach. Sustainable building practices, including the use of low-carbon materials, energy-efficient designs, and biodiversity-friendly urban planning, need to become the norm. I am hopefull that at COP16 there is the chance to bring these two areas—biodiversity and construction—closer together. By incorporating biodiversity into urban developments, protecting natural habitats in construction projects, and promoting nature-based solutions, we can create spaces that benefit both people and wildlife. From green roofs and wildlife corridors to sustainable drainage systems, the possibilities are endless. Let’s ensure COP16 isn’t just about pledges and discussions but leads to real, tangible actions that benefit both the environment and industry. The UK has the potential to lead by example, showing how economic growth and environmental protection can go hand in hand. I’m hopeful that this year’s COP will deliver the bold, decisive steps we need for a sustainable future where both nature and industry can thrive together. #COP16 #Biodiversity #Sustainability #GreenBuilding #Construction #ClimateAction #CircularEconomy #NatureBasedSolutions

Sign a statement: To prevent a full-scale #climate disaster, we need stronger collaboration between researchers and policymakers. Setting limits on #GHG #emissions from the built #environment is essential in every country. Why? 🌍 The built environment accounts for over a third of the global #carbon footprint. 🏚️ Approximately 2 billion new homes will be needed for the growing #population by the end of this century. 🧱 The use of #construction materials is increasing faster than global population. We invite researchers worldwide to sign a public statement, and we call everyone to endorse it. The statement will be presented to key policymakers at COP29 Azerbaijan. With recent reports of failing carbon sinks, the need to reduce emissions is ever more urgent. With the built environment accounting for a significant proportion of global emissions, reductions in this area will have a significant impact. Better collaboration is definitely needed to this end.

🔍 Did you know that buildings are among the largest energy consumers, accounting for 36% of energy-related CO2 emissions? This figure excludes embodied emissions from production, construction, renovation, and end-of-life. The building sector also consumes 50% of the materials by weight in the EU and generates 30% of our waste. Impressive, don’t you think? Since we are very much concerned about the environmental footprint of the building sector, we develop strategies that are compatible with the transition to a sustainable economy and with limiting global warming to 1.5°C. Passion for sustainability has been with me since my school days, and I've been fortunate to grow my career in this field from an early stage. As I continue to learn and grow, my belief in the critical role of the Built Environment in enhancing occupants' health and quality of life in cities only strengthens. Exciting news from the first-ever Buildings and Climate Global Forum in Paris! Organized by the French Government and UNEP, the event concluded with representatives from 70 countries adopting the Declaration de Chaillot, a foundational document for international cooperation towards decarbonization and climate resilience in buildings. With the building sector accounting for over a fifth of global greenhouse gas emissions, it's crucial to drive progress in this area. According to the latest Global Status Report for Buildings and Construction by UNEP and GlobalABC, the building sector represents 37% of global operational energy and process-related CO2 emissions. The Declaration de Chaillot emphasizes the need for action, especially as climate change accelerates and urban populations grow. As 68% of the world's population will live in urban areas by 2050, the role of cities in driving sustainability becomes even more critical. Let's continue our active contribution to shaping a sustainable Built Environment for generations to come. Excited to be at Green Building Council South Africa (GBCSA) Convention with a vision that goes beyond net zero—aiming for Climate Positive impact. Here’s the challenge we’re taking on: 38% of global emissions come from the built environment. But at GCX, we see this as more than a problem. It’s a massive opportunity to turn businesses and the buildings they operate in into powerful tools for positive impact. The theme Zero+: Net Zero Today, Climate Positive Tomorrow isn’t just a catchy line. It’s a call to action. Getting to net zero by 2050? Absolutely. But we’re here to do more than break even. We're aiming to create structures that actively give back to the planet. Find us at the show. Nicole Duvenage | Veruschka Ravjee | Luke Zandstra | Kevin James #GBCSA #GCX #SustainableRealEstate

The Declaration de Chaillot, endorsed by global leaders at the Buildings and Climate Global Forum, highlights the critical role of buildings in addressing climate change. Acknowledging that buildings are responsible for nearly 40% of global energy-related CO2 emissions, the declaration calls for urgent action to reduce emissions from the construction sector. It emphasizes the need for sustainable building practices, energy-efficient design, and the use of low-carbon materials to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement. The declaration underscores the importance of collaboration between governments, businesses, and civil society to accelerate the transition to zero-emission, resilient buildings. Learn more about the commitments made at the forum in the UNEP press release. #ClimateAction #SustainableBuildings #ParisAgreement https://lnkd.in/em--93mh
