What is autonomous operation? Why is it a potential game changer for space missions? Find out in the latest chapter of #KnowledgeBites 👇 💡 Autonomous operations is a new trend in the space industry, where a spacecraft gathers information with its sensors, analyze and use it to make decisions with its on-board computer, and performs actions based on these decisions with its actuators. 🛰 Our on-board computers are an ideal support for autonomous operations in space, thanks to their wide interfacing capability that makes it possible to connect them to almost any sensor or system, their high performance that supports fast and informed decision-making, and their reliability that ensures that these decisions are timely and precisely implemented. 🌍 Autonomous operations opens a wide variety of novel applications in space. For example, autonomous guiding algorithms can allow safe docking of spacecraft in orbit, and real-time object identification can facilitate advanced intelligence and surveillance missions. However, the most promising application is probably automated collision detection and avoidance that could facilitate self-driving satellites to navigate the growing debris field in Low Earth Orbit. This is optimal.
In recent years we have observed increased activity by our adversaries in the space domain. Jackal is our response. On December 21, we launched Jackal on our second mission, Mission X-2 (MX-2) aboard Bandwagon-2 with SpaceX. We have now successfully contacted, downlinked data, and commanded Jackal, our Autonomous Orbital Vehicle, via Mosaic, our software platform, as it makes laps around the Earth. This is a major step in our mission to prove out novel technologies that are purpose-built for a contested space domain. Check out our blog for additional information: https://lnkd.in/g_Gj9_wC

Elon Musk and the SpaceX team have achieved something truly amazing once again! Recently, they completed the fifth test flight of the Starship, their spacecraft designed for future missions to the Moon, Mars, and beyond. But what makes this test flight special is what happened with the Super Heavy rocket, which is the powerful booster that helps launch the Starship into space. For the very first time, SpaceX managed to catch the Super Heavy rocket after launch using robotic arms! These arms are huge and work almost like giant chopsticks. Instead of letting the rocket fall into the ocean or crash to the ground, the robotic arms gently caught it. This is a major step forward because it means that SpaceX is getting closer to making rockets reusable. Reusing rockets would save a lot of money and resources, making space travel more affordable and efficient. This achievement marks a big milestone in space exploration and shows just how far we’ve come. 🌌🚀 #SpaceX hashtag#Starlink hashtag#Robotics hashtag#ArtificialIntelligence hashtag#Innovation hashtag#IQud hashtag#FutureTech
