🏖️🐦 Help us protect our beaches and shorebirds! Tidy beaches can be harmful to the Kentish plover, especially during the breeding period. This little shorebird feeds mainly on vegetation residues at the shoreline where it captures invertebrates such as marine worms, small molluscs and crustaceans, as well as beetles, diptera and other insects and spiders. 😢 Beaches that are regularly cleaned from their natural vegetation residues are poor in food resources and poor habitats for the species. 🌊🌿🐛 Support initiatives that promote sustainable beach cleaning practices to #SaveOurShorebirds and #ProtectOurBeaches. Let’s work together to preserve our #MarineEcosystems and ensure a healthy future for our planet. 🌏🌱 Association "Les Amis des Oiseaux" (#AAO) IUCN Centre for Mediterranean Cooperation Tour du Valat ISPRA BirdLife International UNEP/MAP-Barcelona Convention

World Turtle Day 2024 Among 350 existing species of tortoises and freshwater turtles, 24 are listed critically endangered, 48 endangered and 60 vulnerable (IUCN Red Data List). Turtles are an important biodiversity component having ecological, economic, and cultural values and play a key role in maintaining the healthy aquatic ecosystem. They are used as food, in traditional Chinese medicines, kept as pets and released in temples for religious practices. High international demand for turtle meat and body parts led to the “Asian Turtle Crisis”. Transboundary trade of turtle meat and body parts has pushed many species towards extinction. Coupled with poaching, habitat degradation and aquatic pollution - these creatures are on red list for conservation. Our collective efforts will matter - Conserve the Chelonians

The recent BBC article on the Kenyan coastal village of Kipini paints a heartbreaking picture of a community on the front lines of climate change. Once a thriving tourist destination with beautiful sand dunes and palm trees, Kipini is now battling rising sea levels that are swallowing homes, farmlands, and livelihoods. Over the past decade, nearly 10km of dry land has been lost to the encroaching ocean, with entire mangrove forests—nature’s first line of defense against erosion—being washed away. The impact on local residents has been devastating. Freshwater sources have turned saline, crops have failed, and marine life that once sustained the community has become scarce. As we read about Kipini's struggles, it is a stark reminder of the real and immediate effects of climate change. This isn’t just about numbers or abstract concepts; it’s about people’s lives and their connection to the land they call home. The community’s call for help is urgent. Local authorities are seeking support for a sea wall, but experts warn that a holistic approach, including the restoration of mangrove forests, is essential to truly protect these vulnerable coastal regions. At GENAWIF – Society for Natural Compound- and Drug Research, we are reminded of the incredible power of nature and the delicate balance that sustains our world. Our mission is to explore natural substances and understand their potential, not just in medicine and agriculture, but also in environmental preservation. Kipini’s story reinforces the importance of our work in promoting research and facilitating discourse that can lead to sustainable solutions. Let’s learn from Kipini and redouble our efforts to protect the natural world and the communities that depend on it.
