A new initiative by the Commonwealth countries, 'CommonSpace', explicitly aims to use space tech to 'predict, manage, and recover' from climate disasters, which are becoming more frequent and more serious. More and more countries, associations of countries and international bodies are turning to space tech for a way of grappling effectively with the challenges posed by the changing climate. Among NewSpace Capital's portfolio companies are ICEYE and Kayrros, both of which have been praised for the way they're using Earth Observation technology to increase our knowledge of the climate, protect people and ecosystems, and support disaster response. We are kicking off our new project titled “Integrating Earth Observations Toward Advancing Equitable Resilience to Geohazards in a Changing Climate,” supported by NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration. The primary goal of this multidisciplinary project is to develop a near real-time geospatial framework capable of modeling and mapping the spatiotemporal evolution of geohazards (e.g., landslides, land subsidence, coastal erosion) while identifying priority regions within historically underserved and socially vulnerable communities. The proposed framework integrates socioeconomic attributes, infrastructure system information, and geohazard susceptibility modeling (enabled by state-of-the-art NASA Earth observations) to inform action and decision-making in the context of equity and environmental justice (EEJ). This project is co-designed and will be piloted in close collaboration with our community partners in two communities: East Boston and the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah). Looking forward to working with our great research team, Elaine K Donnelly, PhD (she/her), Laurie Baise, Paul Kirshen, Manoochehr Shirzaei, and wonderful community partners Philip Giffee and Beckie Finn. #climateresilience #equitableresilience #geohazards #earthobservations #environmentaljustice

🚀 Discover the SCO 2024 international projects! 🌍🛰️ As a result of the 2024 international call for projects, the Space for Climate Observatory (SCO) has accredited 🚀17 ambitious projects supported by six national SCOs: China, Gabon, Italy, the Philippines, the UK and the USA, reflecting a global commitment to climate change. 💧Water, 💨 air, 🌍 earth and 🔥 fire. The 17 projects approved by the SCO are perfectly aligned with the four elements, demonstrating the extent to which climate change is affecting our planet and, indeed, our societies. These projects: ✅ focus on various aspects of space-based climate observation. ✅ address key themes such as the atmosphere, forest fires, water management, forest preservation and natural disaster responses. ✅ will receive support from national SCO branches around the world. 🔍 For example, ARTICFIRE, a project in the US, is creating a tool to measure snowpack melt and map its changes in near-real time using NOAA's polar satellites. This tool aids Alaska's Interagency Coordination Center by providing snow cover change data along with temperature, precipitation, and forest duff status to estimate fire potential and optimize the deployment of firefighting resources. Another project in Philippines, NOAH, offers a range of tools and information to improve disaster preparedness and provides access to near-real-time data, hazard maps, weather forecasts and other essential information to help make informed decisions. 👉 To find out more about these inspiring initiatives and their potential impact on our planet, read the full article here : https://lnkd.in/eJE8dSJH Let's celebrate these groundbreaking initiatives and keep the conversation going about using space technology for a sustainable future! 🌱💧🌆 #SCO #ClimateChange #EarthObservation #Climate #Innovation #SustainableDevelopment #InternationalProjects

As we celebrate #WorldEnvironmentDay, it’s a time to reflect on our interconnected destiny both here on #Earth and in #Space. Our commitment at African Geospace to help save lives and the planet remains steadfast, and we are just beginning. We believe that #Africa is the next destination for space investors and climate change stakeholders to partner and strategize to achieve #sustainability on a global scale. The continent’s long-standing tradition of integrating nature-based solutions into everyday life offers valuable lessons for the world. Now is the time for action to ensure no one is left behind. It’s possible for people and the Planet to live in harmony without sacrificing the heritage of #FutureGenerations for today’s economic gain. Space exploration and technology provide a unique vantage point, allowing us to see far beyond with new perspectives where prosperity and sustainability can coexist. Let’s remind ourselves that every day is #EnvironmentDay and to act accordingly. Learn more about us at https://lnkd.in/dAiGNtyJ #PlanetEarth #ClimateChange #SpaceExploration #GreenFuture

Today, as we celebrate our #EarthDay today , let's remember #CarlSagan's famous words: "The Earth is the only world known so far to harbor life... and [it is] our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the #PaleBlueDot, the only home we've ever known." 🌏 And while the challenges we face may seem daunting, there's always hope in the solutions we create. 🌟 Sharing one of my older articles written for Geospatial World on the exciting developments in #EarthObservation field and the potential of utilizing #SatelliteData to combat #climatechange. 🛰️ It's been two years since I wrote this, and thanks to incredible advancements in technology, our ability to monitor and analyze Earth's vital signs from space has become even more precise and impactful. 🌿 https://lnkd.in/g_xT5nmu #EarthDay #Hope #SpaceTechnology #ClimateAction

🌍 Peatlands cover only 3% of Earth's surface but store as much carbon as all other terrestrial ecosystems combined. Proper monitoring, management and preservation of peatlands is crucial for combating climate change. However, their diverse and often inaccessible nature makes this challenging. To address these challenges, the European Space Agency (ESA) launched WorldPeatland project. This initiative uses innovative Earth Observation (EO) tools and indicators to facilitate accurate mapping and monitoring of peatlands worldwide. Existing maps and carbon stock estimates are uncertain due to the difficulty of comprehensive mapping and monitoring, which the project aims to overcome. The WorldPeatland project also seeks to improve greenhouse gas emission estimates and support reporting requirements, ultimately aiding peatland preservation and sustainable management. 🛰️The CREODIAS platform is crucial to this project, providing cloud resources, EO data and services in an open-source, cloud-based environment where users can access all necessary tools. The WorldPeatland project will be completed by mid-2025. Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/eze_Pp7q #CREODIAS #ESA #WorldPeatland European Space Agency - ESA
