As domestic abuse awareness month fast approaches, remember, if we're not talking about coercive control we're not talking about domestic abuse. Coercive control is an act or pattern of acts of assault, threats, humiliation and intimidation or other abuse that is used to harm, punish, or frighten their victim. . Coercive control is a crime under the Serious Crime Act 2015. Domestic abuse is more than a bruise. #CoerciveControl #DomesticAbuse #awareness #impact

We’re supporting the UK Home Office pilot of new measures designed to provide victims of domestic abuse with better protection. Over the next year, British Transport Police, Greater Manchester Police, and three boroughs within the Metropolitan Police will be able to issue new domestic abuse protection notices (DAPNs) and orders (DAPOs). These tools offer a swift way for police to intervene and offer protection for victims in situations where there is a risk of harm, and to prevent further incidents, even if there’s not enough evidence for a criminal charge. Earlier this year, the National Policing Statement for violence against women and girls (VAWG) found that one in every 6 murders in the year ending March 2023 was related to domestic abuse. We’re supporting this pilot as part of our work to support forces to tackle VAWG and deliver trusted and effective policing for victims. We’ve produced guidance to help police officers and staff across the country understand how the new measures can be used and obtained. Whilst only officers in the three pilot forces can apply for a DAPN or DAPO during the trial, they will be enforceable anywhere in England and Wales. For example, when a DAPO recipient breaches their order, wherever they are in the country, the local force can arrest them, whether or not they’re a pilot force. Domestic abusers will be ordered to stay away from their victims, under a new measure announced today. New powers have been granted to the police and courts to impose Domestic Abuse Protection Orders (DAPOs), providing enhanced protections for victims. This means, for the first time, family courts will be able to impose tagging. DAPOs will also enhance existing powers that police have to legally prevent abusers from contacting or approaching their victims, punishable by up to five years in prison. Find out more about DAPOs: https://lnkd.in/ek3QGjDc
