“Can you just add on PR for the U.S. too?” 🇺🇲
Surprisingly or unsurprisingly (depending who you are and your own experiences!), this expectation that a PR consultant can simply ‘add on’ another country to its strategy is becoming all too common. Perhaps it’s a reflection of marketing budgets being increasingly squeezed, and brands understandably wanting to get more for less. Or maybe it’s a sign of naivety on the buyer’s part on what a solid PR and media relations strategy entails - again, understandable if this isn’t their area of expertise.
But having worked in-house in an international tech company where I worked very closely with U.S.-based colleagues, and also having worked very closely with U.S. PR agencies and consultants over the years, I have a real appreciation and understanding of how different the U.S. and UK are when it comes to communications. And the same can be said for any other English-speaking country, too.
Yes, we speak the same language (to an extent!). Yes, some of the stories you want to tell might be similar in each market. Yes, I have access to a global journalist database…
But communication strategies, messaging, approach and general etiquette vary hugely from country to country. And a PR professional not experienced in said market can’t be expected to achieve success without additional support and investment.
That’s why the growing freelance market is so exciting ⭐ There are so many talented, experienced communications professionals around the globe working flexibly and independently who can provide on-the-ground support to brands looking to expand their operations into new countries.
🇬🇧 If you’re an international brand looking to launch in the UK with a carefully thought-out communications strategy, I’d love to have a chat about how I could help you.
🌍 And if you’re a UK brand looking to expand into new markets, I may know just the comms person to help you succeed.
