There is a famous example of the difference between vision and mission, and it’s based on 1960s American president John F. Kennedy. This was during the Cold War with the USSR (Russia), and the USA was falling behind Russia in the race to dominate outer space. The Russians had already gotten the upper hand. They took the lead over the Americans by launching the first man into space, Yuri Gagarin in 1961. Seeing this success by their arch-rival, the Americans were under pressure to achieve something even greater to top the dreaded Russians. It became a matter of national pride and prestige. Therefore top priority. So JFK set a challenge on May 25, 1961 to NASA, the American nation’s space agency. The vision: Land a man on the moon, before this decade is out, and return him safely to Earth. The mission: To lead the world in space exploration and technological innovation. The result of such a compelling and clear vision and mission? On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong became the first man to land and walk on the moon. America saved face. And have dominated space exploration ever since. Wish you nothing but profit and success.

Elon Musk’s rise into Donald Trump’s political orbit in 2024 has overshadowed another milestone this year for the world’s richest man: His space business has launched more rockets than ever, further establishing itself as an indispensable workhorse for NASA and the U.S. military. As of this week, Musk’s SpaceX had completed 112 launches this year — equating to roughly one every three days — an unprecedented pace in the history of spaceflight and already a 16% increase over the 96 launches it performed in 2023, according to data compiled by the American Enterprise Institute (AEI). https://lnkd.in/eB5SgJy2

Nigel Packham, Associate Director, Safety and Mission Assurance at Nasa Johnson Space Centre delivered a compelling presentation at the 12th Annual Focus Network - OHS Leaders Australia Summit 2024 about the "Management of Risk, Land, Sea and Air".   Assessing safety in human spaceflight poses a unique challenge, it's certainly not safe. Instead, organizations like NASA adopt a pragmatic approach, focusing on whether an action is "safe enough" rather than entirely risk-free. This entails identifying and mitigating potential risks to a level deemed acceptable, often quantifying them in terms of likelihood. For instance, while the risk of losing a crew in spaceflight typically ranges from 1:200 to 1:250, early missions like STS-1 in 1981 carried a higher estimated risk, between 1:1,000 and 1:10,000. 🚀 L-2 - A NEW “CRAFT” TO WIELD 🚀 We pick up Ed’s story after being handpicked to join the elite ranks of the space program. At Edwards Air Force Base, where the echoes of Chuck Yeager’s barrier-breaking feats still lingered, Dwight found himself in an environment that was less than welcoming. Despite his undeniable prowess and the presidential patronage, the dream of space remained stubbornly out of reach. His own race, it seems would put into question his continued success in the program. Further marred by the assassination of Kennedy, Dwight’s journey with NASA sputtered into the realm of what-could-have-been. Ed Dwight’s space aspirations may have been grounded for the time being, but the same hands that once steered jets through the clouds turned to sculpting the narratives of those who had been denied their rightful place in history’s lore. His sculptures, wrought from the very metal that once formed the sinews of aircraft, now told stories of resilience and courage. The negative space in his works was not mere absence; it was a profound statement on the gaps in our collective consciousness, the stories untold, the heroes unacknowledged. The Underground Railroad Sculpture in Battle Creek stands as a testament to this vision. Here, Dwight honored not only the Black figures who risked everything for freedom but also allies who put humanity first. Launched at 10:52 a.m. EDT from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, this mission is a testament to human ingenuity and the spirit of collaboration. Aboard the Starliner, veteran NASA astronauts Barry ‘Butch’ Wilmore and Sunita ‘Suni’ Williams are embarking on a historic journey to the International Space Station (ISS). With a combined experience of over 11,000 flight hours, these former U.S. Navy test pilots are set to spend eight days conducting tests to certify the Starliner for operational missions.
