ASL Aviation Ltd Holdings has signed an agreement with ZeroAvia for up to 20 hydrogen-electric engines for retrofit into its operated fleet of ATR regional turboprop aircraft, creating some of the world’s first zero-emission freight aircraft of this scale. James Peck, Chief Customer Officer, ZeroAvia says: “ASL is a major player in freight and beyond, and they are forging the pathway to a sustainable future for the industry, not least in leading in the adoption of new, zero-emission propulsion technologies. 🛫✨ Excited to learn that Kirkwall will have the first operational #hydrogen-electric flying service by 2027 courtesy of Loganair Limited, who has signed an MOU with Cranfield Aerospace Solutions. 👉A significant step towards the Scottish Government’s Update to the Climate Change Plan which set the ambition for Scotland’s internal passenger flights to be #decarbonised by 2040. Loganair is the UK’s largest regional airline and operates lifeline services between all the Scottish Islands and the mainland of Scotland. Driven by a commitment to sustainability, Loganair has set an ambitious goal to achieve Net Zero across all of its operations by 2040. This underscores the airline’s proactive approach toward sustainable aviation, including the potential adoption of CAeS’s hydrogen fuel cell technology into their Islander fleet. Meanwhile, CAeS continues pioneering in developing a proprietary hydrogen fuel-cell (#HFC) propulsion system. ZeroAvia has partnered with innovative German start-up airline, flyvbird, to explore the possibility of using our hydrogen-electric engines to support flyv's on-demand, low-cost flight operations. Flyv is focused on addressing the limitations of traditional travel systems, which are struggling to meet growing demand across various modes of transportation. Moreover, many smaller airfields are underutilized, presenting an opportunity for expansion. With advancements in cleaner technologies reducing operational costs, there's potential for increased flight services. Today, I’m reflecting on the bold path laid out by industry leaders to achieve net-zero aviation by 2025, which was shared at the Aero Club of Washington. Their ambitious roadmap hinges on expanding sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) usage and developing electric, hybrid, and hydrogen-powered aircraft. These efforts require a collaborative ecosystem involving companies, government agencies, and educational institutions. Michael Amalfitano of Embraer Executive Jets highlighted the importance of partnerships in scaling up SAF and electrification. Embraer’s initiatives range from 100% SAF tests to electric ag-plane trials and hybrid-electric technology. Scott Lewis at World Energy shared how they’re working toward producing a billion gallons of SAF by 2030 and scaling their California and Houston facilities. Billy Nolen from Archer emphasized the value of government policies and investment in driving sustainable aviation technologies. Archer’s Midnight eVTOL aims to redefine accessible flight, thanks to federal support and regulatory collaboration. It’s inspiring to see how far-reaching partnerships are essential for pushing these innovations forward. To achieve net zero, we must invest in training a skilled workforce and foster cooperation across the supply chain, government, and academia. Aviation is working towards net-zero carbon by 2050. Gerry Hoadley, our GSE business leader, discusses why transitioning ground fleets to electric vehicles is a good place to start in Airport Business Aviation Pros.    50% of airport ground fleets today are made up of gas-powered vans, trucks, sedans and golf carts. Transitioning these full-size ICE vehicles to right-sized EVs can help airports achieve this ambitious goal.
