Madrid, a city immortalized by the vibrant films of Pedro Almodóvar, is a veritable tapestry of art, culture, history, and gastronomy—a city where even a year’s exploration could merely scratch the surface of its riches. At the heart of the city’s grandeur stands the Palacio Real, an undeniable jewel in Madrid's illustrious crown. Though the Spanish royal family no longer resides within its walls, this majestic palace remains the venue for official state receptions and grand galas. Erected in 1734 atop the ruins of the ancient Palacio Alcázar, itself a remnant of the emirate of Cordoba and commissioned by Mohamed I Omeya in 860, the Palacio Real was designated the official residence of King Felipe V in 1764. Today, the palace retains its title as the largest in Europe, its grandeur mirrored by lavish interiors that include doors of rich mahogany, intricate marble and stucco work, and an enviable collection of artworks by masters such as Goya, Velázquez, and Caravaggio. Not to be overlooked is the palace's extensive network of underground tunnels, a labyrinth connecting it to various points across the capital. Legend has it that King Felipe IV once had these tunnels flooded to create waterways for gondola travel. Amid the oppressive heat of a Madrid summer, the few neurons that remain alert transport us through the meandering corridors of history, so captivating that they make it challenging to commence our #learnanywhere session. The last time I was in Germany was back in 2018. Time flies. COVID-19 and relocating have significantly reshaped my #life plans and travel habits. Most of my annual leave now goes toward trips back to my hometown, leaving only limited time for short getaways. Over the past decade, I’ve been fortunate enough to explore many incredible destinations, including Spain, Croatia, Montenegro, Poland, Sweden, Denmark, Cambodia, Myanmar, Jordan, Armenia, Iran, Nepal, Israel, and even Palestine, etc. Yet, one destination stands out as a surprising omission: Japan. Unlike many Hongkongers and Taiwanese, Japan was rarely a go-to destination for me. In fact, I only visited once in the past decade—until I moved closer. Last year and this year, all my trips were to Japan, thanks to its proximity to Taiwan. I truly miss the days of long trips! On the bright side, it’s exciting that Cathay now offers more direct flights to Europe. Here's to hoping for more adventures ahead! Who knows our next #destination? #travel #travelholic #getaways #vacation

Venice on a budget - when to go, where to stay, what to eat, and much more - because a trip to Venice doesn't have to be expensive if you follow a few simple rules. While visiting this year's Biennale di Arte, I also took the opportunity to update this comprehensive guide. So even if you've already read it, it's worth checking it out once more before your next trip to Venice as many things have changed. For instance, there is this new, very confusing entrance fee to the historic center. As always, my tips will help you make your trip smooth and more enjoyable. https://lnkd.in/dywb8t9c #venice #venezia #mestre #italia #italy #veneto #budgettrip #citybreak #byemyself #byemyselftravels

What do you do if you work at the Institut für Windenergiesysteme (LUH) and you want to travel to a scientific wind energy conference such as Torque 2024? Right, you travel by train. So we do 😎. We is Felix Prigge, Basem Rajjoub and A.Wasay Khan. Looking forward to arrive in Florence tomorrow morning. However, there is room for improvements at railway companies to make the decision to travel by train easier, as literally NOTHING worked out as originally planned: - Local train from home to the office in the morning cancelled, took the next one 30 min later. Doable. - Train from Hanover to Munich cancelled, without a message, looked like train did not exist, even in the app. Bad communication. Took the next train more than 1 hour later. Not doable without planning tons of time for changing the train - which we fortunately did. However, less time for a fine Bavarian dinner… Not so nice, but still somewhat ok. - Nightjet from Munich to Florence: Couchette replaced by a seat wagon. Curious how comfortable and relaxing the journey is going to be. Will potentially report on that tomorrow. However, that is unreasonable. I may prepare with some Bavarian beer for the night. The lesson learned is - again, as last year: Plan enough time for changing trains and take the time of an international business travel by train as an adventure and an invaluable team building event, which it basically is. Anyways, please, Deutsche Bahn and ÖBB-Personenverkehr AG, improve your services. I fear this is not the way we can convince people to change from cars and planes to trains.
Let the journey begin! See you in sunny Firenze at the #Torque 2024 conference in two days. #sustainabletravel
