Absolutely delighted to be recognised by University of Nottingham for a recent talk on #menasallies in the field of #STEM but of course the praise and the plaudits go to the irrepressible force of nature that is Alexandra Knight CEng FIMechE FWES and her super STEMAZING team! You may know this is a subject dear to my heart. About 30% of the UK’s workforce are employed in #science and #engineering jobs which total well over 9million. Of that only 25% are women and that stat encapsulates why I and many others are focused on moving the dial through #inspiring, #mentoring and #sponsorship of #women and other #underrepresented groups. There is plenty of data to show that #diverse and #inclusive workforces are more #profitable, #innovative, #happier and #retain their staff. It's a win-win! If we only engaged 1% of #menasallies that would equate to over 60,000. That's a highly significant number considering estimates say around 40,000 women left the #STEMindustries in mid career last year. In my book we need to get leadership to have courage and stick their necks out, get their priorities right, believe in the cause and set the strategy to increase the numbers. If my CEO has bought in then there is a good chance my employees will. Let's get on with it and stop "pfaffing around"! There are many employee resource groups (ERGs) focused on women in traditionally male dominated sectors such as engineering, energy and tech but most often they are run by the women they are supposed to support. In an interview with STEMAZING, Prof Vince Pizzoni FIChE CEng BSc FCMI AFWES FEI MSPE MCDI from University of Nottingham talks about why we need to get more men involved as allies. "As a male leader actively involved in promoting gender balance within organisations, I’ve come to recognise the critical role that courage and commitment play in driving meaningful change. When it comes to my advice for other male leaders looking to be effective allies in this arena, I believe the key lies in taking risks and demonstrating genuine support.", says Prof Pizzoni. STEMAZING is a non-profit social enterprise dedicated to inspiration and inclusion in STEM. They work with women in STEM, allies, educators, organisations, institutions and families to collectively build a more diverse and inclusive STEM future. The results are in! 🎉 Last week, we asked an important question: What’s the best way to highlight the contributions of racially diverse professionals in STEM? Take a look how the community voted: 👇 The message is clear: storytelling is a powerful tool to celebrate and amplify diverse voices in STEM. By sharing individual journeys and achievements, we can inspire others and foster a more inclusive future. At Race in STEM, we’re committed to making this vision a reality. But the conversation doesn’t stop here - what else can we do to drive meaningful change? 💬 Drop your ideas in the comments! Let’s work together to create a STEM community where every contribution is valued and celebrated. #RaceInSTEM #DiversityInSTEM #InclusionMatters #STEMCareers #EquityInSTEM

Young girls need to see successful modern-day role models in the world of STEAM. Having women to look up to in the present moment helps girls see their own potential, follow their dreams, and shows them that they belong. Gender stereotypes often sends the message to young girls that STEAM is for boys. By highlighting women who are currently successful in STEAM, we can show that anyone – regardless of gender – can succeed in STEAM. Having role models gives girls the motivation and inspiration they need to pursue their interests. Knowing that someone who looks like them has been successful in STEAM encourages them to pursue their passions. Rewriting the narrative is Emily Calandrelli – host of Outer Space and Emily's Wonder Lab; Komal Singh – author of Ara the Star Engineer; and Xyla Foxlin – founder of Beauty and the Bolt; and Poh Tan PhD, PhD, – Founder and CEO of STEMedge Inc., among many others. Can you name some more inspirational women in STEAM? #STEAM #STEAMeducation #DiversityAndInclusion

Honoring youth voice is essential to any initiative aimed at empowering young people. At #CYESS, we envision a future where adults share power with young people and empower them to use STEM knowledge, skills, and tools to tackle societal challenges that affect us all. Today, we invite you to reflect on the ways you can ensure that the young people you work with feel heard and empowered in the decisions and activities that affect them. 📣 #MentoringMonth

"Youth culture refers to the cultural practice of youth by which they express their identities and demonstrate their sense of belonging to a particular group of young people." In last week's mini-workshop, Jennelle Ramdeen talked about the importance of honoring youth culture in youth programming. Jennelle shared four specific ways that youth programs tend to stifle youth culture: 1. Using a program to promote the internalization of dominant culture 2. Tokenizing 'the Best' 3. Funder demands 4. Moving at the pace of capitalism instead of the pace of trust and learning You can learn more from Jennelle in their upcoming training, Feminist Youth Programming: Designing and facilitating for transformative impact (cynara.co/youth) beginning on June 5th. "Give them confidence, build them up. Show them girls can do anything a man can!" -YOUTH VOICES panelist. While there are a significant number of activities, programs, and initiatives focused on increasing girls’ and women’s participation in the STEM workforce, we have yet to see a significant shift in the landscape. Here are the themes that emerged from our national convening: the importance of centering girls’ voices and valuing girls’ unique experiences, learning from existing efforts rather than reinventing the wheel, connecting diverse sectors through collaboration, shifting the dialogue about STEM to focus on inspiring curiosity in STEM and changing the messaging about math, and acknowledging the important role corporations play in community engagement. 🎄 Day 2 of STEM-Mas 🎄 Happy 2nd day of #STEMmas everyone! Tomorrow is the #InternationalDayofPersonsWithDisabilities, but this story is coming early like a great Christmas gift. Today, we’re celebrating resilience and inclusivity in STEM by highlighting Yujia D., an alumnus of Northwestern University who shared their journey navigating STEM as a person with a disability in an article for Smithsonian Education. Their powerful story reminds us that the field of STEM is for everyone, and diversity, in all its forms, strengthens innovation and progress. 💡 Key Takeaways from Her Journey: Accessibility and accommodation are vital to unlocking potential. Resilience is built through support systems, self-advocacy, and determination. Inclusivity in STEM isn’t just a value but necessary for solving the world’s most complex challenges. ✨ A Quote That Stuck with Us: "STEM isn’t just about solving problems; it’s about reimagining the world to work better for everyone—including those of us who think or move differently." What steps can we take to make STEM more accessible and inclusive for people with disabilities? Share your thoughts or personal experiences in the comments! Follow along for the 25 Days of STEM-Mas as we spotlight the diverse voices that make STEM extraordinary. Together, we can create a more inclusive and innovative future. 🌟 #25DaysOfSTEMMas #WomenInSTEM #DiversityInSTEM #AccessibilityMatters
