The new European Parliament, which will be formed in a few days' time, will be called upon to make strategic choices for Europe's competitiveness, starting with energy and environmental policy. The green transition toward cleaner energy has been a priority of EU policies. This has featured prominently in the European Recovery Fund (NextGen EU) and in its latest addition (RepowerEU). However, two shortcomings have not been addressed, according to Draghi's report. The first is that the green transition has not resulted in cheaper energy. Energy prices have remained elevated with very limited price benefits for European consumers. Moreover, Europe has not taken advantage of the commitment to the green transition to gain a technological edge in the necessary technology. Draghi’s report points out that this cannot be accomplished unless the connection between the policy objective and industrial development is leveraged.
