China's Research Dominance in Key Tech, also Automotive A new report from the Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI) reveals a seismic shift in the global research landscape: 🇨🇳 China is now leading in 👉 57 out of 64 critical technologies 👈 examined in the ASPI Critical Technology Tracker, including areas vital to the future of the automotive industry such as electric batteries, advanced materials, and artificial intelligence. This lead has been steadily building for the past two decades and shows no signs of slowing down. The risk of a Chinese technology monopoly is rising. The report identifies 👉 24 technologies 👈 at high risk of Chinese monopoly, including those with clear applications in the #automotive sector like advanced aircraft engines, drones, and swarming and collaborative robots. 🇺🇲 🇬🇧 🇪🇺 🇯🇵 🇰🇷 🇦🇺 The US and other Western nations are falling behind. While the US maintains a strong position in certain areas, its lead has eroded significantly, particularly in fields like electric batteries (aka advanced chemistry) where China has achieved both research and manufacturing dominance. Last week, I had the privilege of participating in the #Wabtec DI India #WITEC Hackathon 2024 #DI_India_Hackathon_2024, where innovation truly came alive. The hackathon was more than just a competition—it was a platform to connect, innovate, and create impactful solutions. Our team developed a proof-of-concept model for an open-source #safety analysis tool. Tackling the challenges of license constraints and costs for Fault Tree Analysis (#FTA), we showcased how a free and open-source software (#FOSS) approach could be applied to system safety evaluations in train operations. Our homegrown solution addresses core challenges in FTA tools by: #CostSavings: Eliminates license fees and associated overhead costs. #Scalability: Removes limits on logic gates and concurrent tool usage. #Flexibility: Freely shareable modules for team workshops and customer-specific needs.
