Today is World AIDS Day. World AIDS Day is marked globally on 1 December to raise awareness about HIV and eliminate stigma and discrimination. As a community we are mindful of those among us living with HIV, of demonstrating our support for them and honouring lives lost over the past 40 plus years. In 2024 the global theme asks us to consider how we will help – to uphold human rights and support those who are marginalised or discriminated against. In Australia the national theme asks us to be proactive with ‘It starts with me’. Central to this are the themes of Inclusion. Respect. Equity. that were explored on World AIDS Day in 2023. As we approach World AIDS Day, December 1, 2024, we reflect on this year’s theme, “Take the Rights Path” which emphasises the critical role of protecting and promoting human rights in the fight against HIV/AIDS. On this day, we are reminded that the path forward is one where dignity, equality, and access to care are essential for all individuals. HIV is no longer a death sentence, but the journey toward better health begins with knowing your status. Early testing is key to empowering individuals and opening the door to timely care and support. Education plays a pivotal role in this transformation. By sharing knowledge, challenging stigma, and fostering empathy, we can build communities that are inclusive and supportive. As per UNAIDS: Ending AIDS Is About More Than Just Treatment. It's About Justice & Human Rights This year’s theme, "Take the Rights Path," from UNAIDS, emphasises that ending AIDS is not just about medicine but also about ensuring individuals get access to the right treatment. At The Lotus Biotech, we believe that discriminatory laws, stigma and inequality create barriers to HIV care, particularly for marginalised communities. Today, on #WorldAIDSDay, I stand in with solidarity with all who is on the ongoing fight against HIV/AIDS, and the urgent need for global solidarity in ensuring human rights for everyone affected. As we honor the lives lost and support those living with HIV, we are reminded that this battle is far from over. People living with HIV/AIDS still face discrimination, stigma, and inequality barriers that prevent access to the healthcare, resources, along with adignity they deserve. We must continue to advocate for policies that prioritize human rights, healthcare access, and education. Gender-based violence (#GBV) and HIV/AIDS are interconnected crises in the U.S. Survivors of GBV face increased risks of HIV due to many factors including lack of consent. Forced or coerced acts often leave survivors unable to protect themselves, increasing their risk of HIV. Lack of consent often leaves survivors without the chance to make choices to protect their health, such as condom health or PrEP. Empowering survivors starts with promoting education, awareness, and access to survivor-centered care.
