I noticed the following John Lewis advert on TV last night and it looks like they are looking to rejuvenate the 'Never knowingly undersold' strapline/brand positioning ahead of its 100th anniversary next year. I thought they had retired the concept a couple of years ago, so this is an interesting move but one that will give them something to really leverage in the super-competitive retail sector. maybe this is the beginning of something new / I also found more important key points that Nike has made since 2020. 1. Sustainability: Nike launched its “Move to Zero” initiative, aiming for zero carbon and waste, introducing more eco-friendly products like the Nike Air Zoom Alphafly Next Nature. 2. Digital Transformation: Nike strengthened its e-commerce presence, launching the Nike Training Club app during the pandemic and boosting direct-to-consumer sales. 3. Innovation: Continued focus on performance innovation with products like the Nike FlyEase and collaborations like Travis Scott and Sacai. 4. Social Impact: Nike supported racial justice movements, pledging over $40 million to support Black communities. 5. Recently, Nike also announced plans to open another major sports research lab in Shanghai, set to begin construction in 2024. This facility is part of Nike’s ongoing investment in China, where the company has increasingly focused on tailoring products to local athletes. INDUSTRY NETWORKING: People Who Changed My Life Who have you met that changed your life, your career, even your very being? I met my list at AAPN events. For example: What better way to highlight a life changer, in this case Jim Hopkins of Hamrick Mills, than to show you photos of him changing the lives of others.    The top two photos show Jim this last month during our sixth AAPN Carolinas Mill Bus Tour. Jim and his crew go above and beyond on explaining wovens and highlighting the technology of the process.    On all of these tours, we are educating some young people who literally do not know the difference between knits and wovens. They know wovens when Jim is done with them.   He knows wovens from his undergrad success learning textiles at the NC State Wilson College of Textiles, like so many others in our membership. From that start, he has invested over 40 years in wovens. Few have seen the history of our industry so up close and personal as Jim.    One other note – Jim is one of the few who has played a round of golf at the first resort golf course in the U.S. (1892) and my favorite round in the world, The Links at Poland Spring in Maine.    The Change? What we hear time and again from those on our tours is their discovery that there are a lot of Americans in this business who are truly subject matter experts. A "bizarre" talent partnership that dropped this week that I love, despite the headlines Burberry's ad with "Cold" Cole Palmer features the Premier League star sitting by a pond for 9 minutes and 34 seconds—occasionally adjusting his fishing rod. That's it. Literally, that’s all that happens. 🎣 No product features. No music. No edits. No CTA. With Cole's popularity at an all-time high and his brilliant nickname (and his iconic celebration to match), it's well played by Burberry to align with him and put Cole in their classic duffle coat. Plus, the #ItsAlwaysBurberryWeather slogan couldn’t be more fitting. The ad starts as if Cole himself hits 'record' on the camera. In a world full of marketing that’s overloaded with effects and dynamics, this ad takes a refreshing approach—a calm, soothing break from the noise. I appreciate it similar to how I enjoy YouTube's "Enjoy The Zen" ads. On the back end, this sort of filming day is low lift for a talent with an extremely busy work schedule at the moment. The simplicity of the filming process likely made it appealing, enabling him to shoot the ad in a short amount of time without extensive production demands. It also benefits Burberry, allowing them to leverage Cole's rising star power without a hefty budget.
