Nervous system regulation isn’t about being calm all the time. Wait, what? Until recently not many people had heard of nervous system regulation A few years later and it’s everywhere. Which is wonderful, as it’s a total game changer ✨ However, as with many ‘new’ ideas (it’s not new, it’s now just popular), it can get misunderstood. Regulating our nervous system doesn’t mean that we’re aiming for permanent calm. It means that we’re able to ebb and flow with our emotions and stress, without being flooded by them. We build our capacity to feel safe in our body so we can experience all our emotions We recognise what our baseline is and, using awareness and tools of regulation, we learn how to return to it With balance and ease Want to learn how? So true! I'm learning that it's all about being able to sit WITH the feelings, rather than ELIMINATING them.
Great shout to highlight this Susie. It’s a misunderstanding that can cause folks to feel they’re broken if they’re not able to maintain a state of calm. Nervous system regulation, as you say, is about widening our window of tolerance for the whole emotional shebang - cultivating equanimity in the presence of uncomfortable feelings so they can flow, without us getting overwhelmed. Awareness rocks y’all 🤘
I thought it was about feeling calm!
You don't need a calm nervous system, you just need to know how to regulate it.
I think the goal of constant calm is perpetuated by many in the spiritual community, in my experience.

9moVery true Susie…imagine if we were calm all the time? Not much opportunity to get fired up for something, not to mention feeling pretty lethargic! “It means that we’re able to ebb and flow with our emotions and stress, without being flooded by them.” Like this line 👆
