Community groups, a term you may hear often in informal settings but what does it encompass in definition. A community group can be any organisation with a social mission that doesn’t fall into our other categories. #Community groups may include #mutual aid groups, common interest groups, grassroots organisations and more. In the context of the villages of Kasanga, Kaghando and Katasenda, community groups act as a form of mutual aid group taking into account the remote nature of their locations, it is understandable that formal financial institutions would see it as a risky decision to set up shop thus leaving the residents of the village unable to easily access formal financial institutions. The notion “local solutions for local problems” stems from the desire to highlight the ingenuity of #local communities in being able to come up with alternative solutions to problems they face such as the afore-mentioned in relation to financial institutions. THE IMPACT OF COMMUNITY GROUPS CAN’T AND SHOULD NOT BE UNDER-STATED AS THE GRAPHIC HIGHLIGHTS. IN THE VILLAGE OF KASANGA, THE PERCENTAGE OF PEOPLE IN COMMUNITY GROUPS SHOT UP FROM 44% TO OVER 75% DURING THE BASELINE AND MIDLINE RESPECTIVELY WHILE KAGHANDO & KATASENDA SAW AN INCREASE FROM 48% TO 80% AS WELL. Such results highlight long-term solutions and the opportunity for the community to be self-reliant which is tenet of #aid and #development and can be achieved if the community is entrusted with responsibility of choice and guaranteed autonomy in what projects and problems to tackle.
