Safe drinking water and sanitation go hand in hand. We cannot ensure we have safe and clean drinking water if we have communities that are lacking in basic sanitation facilities. In communities where there are no, or inadequate toilet facilities, they often turn to utilising nearby water sources for sanitation purposes - when then contaminates the same water that people bathe in, use for washing clothing and drinking water. For the latest installment of our Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) 50th Anniversary Video Series, we spoke with Council Member Chad Seidel and the Executive Director of the Association of State Drinking Water Administrators Alan Roberson. Seidel and Roberson discuss how the SDWA ushered in necessary improvements to drinking water quality including enforceable standards. And they urge greater vigilance finding a balance between identifying and regulating new contaminants with maintaining what we have already achieved.
